Have you seen it?

What did you think?

I thought it was interesting in the way that normally 'taboo' type questions concerning religion were asked of 'religious people' and 'religious leaders' of all different faiths....And it was very interesting to hear their reactions and responses.

It was kind of like Maher was openly asking questions of people that I wouldn't dare to ask ( especially here in the South where we live).

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

I did see it a few weeks ago. At first it started out how its going to explore all religion but it ended up focusing just on Catholism and only a bit of Jewism.

Now, I am an athiest, so I should have enjoyed seeing some religion getting torned up, but I wasn't impressed because it just focused on only one religion. Every religion has silly meaningless rules, regulations, values and stories. I wish the host of that movie would have explored other religions too and not just focus on Bible.

It doesnt surprise me that he mostly only focused on certain religions. Does he make any attempt in the movie to point out good things that have come from religion?

Nope he didn't point out any of those, and as you said how the preview shows him to be mocking, that's exactly what he was doing, MOCKING.

I remember him interviewing Muslims and a couple of the many variations of Christianity,he talked about how the various religions that had 'roots' in the Mediterranian region all seemed to have the same stories-and that was interesting to me.

He did question some on their beliefs of some of the Bible stories, though; but he also questioned some Muslims on some verses from their texts too, and some former Mormons on the Book of Mormon too.

But I completely understand how some would find the movie distastful or offensive to them.

Yet-to me- it's still interesting to see the reactions of some [especially the senator] when questioned about exactly 'what' they believe.

I havent seen it and it does looks like it would be funny. The tone of it I dont like, in the preview he just went around mocking people.

Here's the thing-the preview is not the whole movie and [i just know there is going to be brimstone and fireballs now]....Why is it 'mocking' to ask people what they absolutly believe and why...? Plus, it's not his fault if what they believe makes some movie -goers laugh- or comes across as alittle 'out there' and 'funny'.

JMHO.

eta-I hasten to add that the ppl from the different religions that he interviewed seemed only too willing to share their POV. No one forced them to.

I'm more curious now to see it. The thing is though - depending on who you ask, you can get some really silly or odd answers. Jay Leno would do that shtick with people on the street - asking them who was the first president and then choose only the silliest answers to air...so in that sense - it is a mockery.

Yes, I see what you are saying.... But who is getting mocked? Honestly, IMO-it wasn't anyone's 'God' ...it was what ppl in the interviews were saying...and...how 'out there' they looked and sounded....For example there is a guy on there who is a millionaire by claiming he is the second coming of Christ- and loads of ppl believing him-yet when being interviewed, he has no basis for his claims.

I do agree that it was leaning toward the just plain weird and out there aspects.

.. Just like in your Jay Leno analogy, it is not the Presidents being mocked, but ppl not knowing diddly about the basics of their own country; and that spawns a chuckle ( from me anyway) followed by 'what a dufuss'.

It's worth renting. :)

His Santa Clause set up is a perfect example of what Im talking about. I did mention also that I had only seen the preview and asked somebody a question about the movie. I didnt jump to conclusions and I asked questions. With that said it would of been very easy to jump to conclusions considering Im familiar with Maher, his style, and what he thinks of religion. I have watched him on HBO and when he hosted Politically "Incorrect" and more often than not his focus is on the negative things about religion.

I hope my post didn't come across as 'attacking' or whatever...Wasn't meant that way at all.

I am interested in everyone's POV on it as the movie is based around something that I have found [here in America especially] as being somewhat of a taboo.

That's all. :)
