hi, i was reading about the Pre-NVC / Preparing Documents Before NVC Processing. i want to start collecting document, my first question is, my SO reside in nigeria, how can he goes about obtaining the Police Clearance Certificate and the medical when the time reach for him to submit the documents. Do the the embassy sent him or does he makes his own appontment.

Secondly, when the time reaches, the Marriage certificate, birth certificate, Police Certificate; passport biographic page are all these documents mail to NVC or are the documents present to the CO during the interview? if the original documents are mail, do the CO return the the original birth and marriage certificate?

anybody who have knowledge about this can help, but i really want someone who went through the visa process in nigeria to respond.

Please never ever send your original documents to anyone. Copies should suffice with the original seals. Always send copies and not the originals. The embassy will send him a notice of when to get the police certificate, and to come for his appointment.

Do the the embassy sent him or does he makes his own appontment. He needs to make arrangements to get his Nigerian police certificate. Also, if he has lived in any other country for at least 6 months since he was 16 he will need a police certificate from that country as well.

Secondly, when the time reaches, the Marriage certificate, birth certificate, Police Certificate; passport biographic page are all these documents mail to NVC or are the documents present to the CO during the interview? if the original documents are mail, do the CO return the the original birth and marriage certificate? Do not send original documents to NVC. Keep all the originals for the interview.

Pardon my ignorance but when we got a letter from NVC, they require us to submit original documents/certified true copies. I guess its a case to case basis huh? im under F2A - family based category.

This link might help:

http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/info/info_3195.html

Original Document Requirements

The applicant and each family member who will accompany the applicant to the United States will need to submit original documents or certified copies of the documents listed in this section from an appropriate authority (the issuing entity).

Photocopy Requirement

In addition to sending the original documents or certified copies of the documents to the NVC, the applicant and each accompanying family member must submit a photocopy of the original documents or certified copies of the documents.

jhun, you are correct. NVC does want original documents.

When they say 'certified copies' - they do not mean you go and photocopy your marriage certificate and have a notary 'certify' it. They want a copy from the government office that issues them.

That is correct, you must send the originals with photocopies of the documents. If you don't have the originals they will accept certified copies from the issuing government agency/office.

Just to clarify. I know that in some countries people are actually given an 'original' - however in ALL cases they will accept a copy of the, say birth registry, from the issuing government office.

So if you are one of those one in a million people who actually have a true original birth certificate (for example) and you do not want to part with it, that is ok - however you will have to go to the registrar of births and get a government issued certified true copy of the birth entry.
