Justashooter..i appreciate your definition.....

i am always curious and feel it is the 1st step in the therapy process with my clientele to get definitions of a word and my assumption are based on my knowledge and may not be connected to their viewpoints......

the word "love' for example .....or "hate"..."respect' etc...

Defining our concepts is the most important part of communication. In this community of diverse cultures and diverse native languages, it is especially so. The chinese written language has three different characters for love. The first describes the longing felt by those experiencing seperation. The second describes the devotion to a partner typically felt by a chinese wife. The third describes the passion felt by a chinese man for his mistress. The existence of these three, and lack of others, determines the fate of a chinese marriage. So, we are all bound by our language, which is the root of our concepts. Understanding this allows us to forgive one another for the natural confusion between partners in a mixed marriage.

Is there a Chinese symbol for the love a Chinese man has for his wife?

don't you know that wives are not to be loved....they're to be empowered, taught, encouraged and their lives improved by their husbands...but not loved.

Which begs the question though, is the written chinese language significantly different from the spoken? (as it is in many languages) in which case the colloquial words for love are probably a lot more nuanced than these somewhat cold, perhaps literary words? Hence providing Mr Shooter with an excuse for his somewhat predatory behaviour that in fact should not exist?

Chinese use figurative speach, much as we do, but it is often more abstract. A recently popularised term that came into the language last year is "black oyster". It was coined to describe the ####### minora of a famous young HK movie actress that was caught up in the Edward Chen scandal. The errantly released photos inspired the term, and it is now a well known colloqy in the written and spoken language of the mainland. It is an accurate description, in my humble opinion, of the particular individual's anatomical feature, but not so of the average mainlander. Nonetheless, it is lingua franca du jour.

The traditional character, still used in HK and Taiwan, has forms not found in the simplified character, and is more pictographic in nature. The simplified character was introduced on the mainland in the 1950's as a way to reduce brush strokes required to make a character (concept), and some nuance of meaning was lost, but not much. Most mainlanders can write 2000-5000 characters, and by inferrence, vaguely understand 25000 or so if read. The most familiar characters are those most used, so the written language has become a mirror of the adult population, and a bondage for the children learning to write. Their minds are influenced strongly by the character forms available to describe concepts.

The spoken Chinese most universally understood on the mainland is called pu tong hua (the standard language), and is based on a beijing style Mandarin that was used by the Ching Dynasty between 1600 and 1900, or so. Taiwanese speak something nearly identical. HK people also. Guandongnese and Fujianese (most common chinese seen in America, especially in the low income group) speak similar dialects that are unintelligeable to putonghua speakers. Chinese immigrants today will speak putonghua if they arrived on J-1 visa. Coastal, South, South-west, Central, and Northern Chinese have province and city dialects that are considered home languages, and used only in conversation with locals. People under 35-40 who have made it to high school (30-40% of the population) will generally speak the home language and putonghua.

Older people will generally speak only their local language, unless well educated.

All Chinese dialects are monosylabic tonals, in nature, and the assignments of sound to character are not identical, from one group to the next. A single sound, usually produced in the throat without much use of tongue or lips and with a particular choice of 4-6 possible tones will represent one of up to 50 written characters in common use. Some represent only 2-3 characters in common use. These sounds can also be used to represent family and given names, which are a special subset of characters having no literal meaning. Obviously, choice of given name is dependent upon consideration of characters having similar pronunciation, and their related meanings. There is no name character for "ba", which is how you say the number eight, and also how you say death.

Paul,

you're just too old for me, and besides that, you have no tits. I'm breaking up with you. Call my lawyer.

What if he gets implants and promises not to throw dishes?

And agrees not to paint the bathroom/bedroom pink without consulting you first.

Last resort....we women all need a beautiful pink bedroom.

Shooter is like Buddha, but hung like a Killer Whale. In China, they have a colloquial term for him - deadly mushroom. Deadly mushroom beats black oyster in Mahjong...all the time.

Traditionally, Chinese men did not take wives for love. (Which is a horribly modern, Western notion in itself.) For "love" they would take a mistress. Historically, this is pretty much how it's always been - especially among the landed/wealthier classes. The Chinese just tend to be a bit more nuanced about it. :P

Nauseous, really? I thought the Pepto Bismol color would be kind of soothing on the stomach and counteract the bulimic response in someone desperately trying to maintain their 105lb weight for the benefit of their superficial husband which would only lead to divorce, of course.
