I got mine as soon as I had a SSN in my married name (that's Wisconsin)! Cost me 30$ and took about 10 days to receive it by mail!

You can check with your state Department of Transport, it varies state to state.

Here in PA, you have to have a medical, which means I had to wait until we were married and I was on Dave's medical coverage. Just waiting for that now and I can finally get behind the wheel!

I live in Minnesota and got my drivers license though I dont have my SSN or EAD and AOS still pending.I just had to show my passport with the K3 visa and I-94 card and my Canadian driver's license. Just had to pass eye exam and written test. Got the temp. license the same day too.

In Indiana, I was able to keep, and use, my Ontario license throughout the whole process, but it was a really, really frustrating process...

I had to take my written test and have a learner's permit. Thank God I had the Ontario license so I could drive on my own. Couldn't work until I got my EAD/SSN, so I can't even imagine being stuck in the house until Don got home from work to take me out!!

They also had to photocopy my visa and passport and send it off to Dept. of Homeland Security to verify my status before they would actually send me the card. This took about 90 days, as I only received it a few days before going for my road test for my full license.

I passed the road test and was told that I should start my own driving school (lol)... and even though they had already verified my status and given me the learner's permit card, they had to AGAIN photocopy and send everything. My card came in the mail a few months later once again, but they still let me keep my Ontario one since it can't legally be used as photo ID, only as proof of ability to drive :)

Even with my SSN, they had to verify my status and everything when I went to change my address and wouldn't just give me the amended card. Grrr!!! I'm holding off on changing my address this time until after I get my greencard.. lol

I'm coming from Australia.

Question is i have both car and motorcycle licence here, with no restrictions.

do i have to sit for a mass licence?

or will they just send me a licence in the mail after i get my ssn and green card?

Just curious.

Yes you will have to take a test - supposedly within 3 months of arriving - my daughter found this out after a cop stopped her for some minor reason - a light out.

I think it is quite short and simple - so it will pay to get the US version of the highway code. Thats in Idaho - don't know about other states.
