my husband is a foreign doctor. he is finishing up his third year of residency this year. the best advice i have is study study study. its best to get high scores on those exams. most hospitals wont even look at ur application if u dont have at least an 80%. the higher the score the better for them. chances also get lower in getting a job if u have been out of school a long time. some places only will hire u if u have graduated 3 years or less. its very competative so u have to out shine everyone.

my husband had a really bad time in getting a residency. he had to beg his butt off as he scored very low on his tests and had been out of college for almost 12 years. i to this day only think the program director hired him because he was dieing and wanted to do something nice for someone before he went.

any way good luck to ur husband.

your husband is dying? oh no! my husband just graduated last year october 2008...i know it is very competitive and i told him to aim for over 90% in his usmle step exams...on top of that he is also doing his internship (post graduate intern) for about 8 months in internal medicine while studying for his exam so that they will see he is still having some experience in hospital rotations...he plans to take his exam maybe in july...he is really studying for it and i hope he gets okay...

how did ur husband apply?

noooo my husband isnt dieing...the program director who hired him did.

experience really doesnt matter as my husband had 12 years experience and still didnt get any interviews.

he applied thru ERAS as most take applications that way only. i think the first 6 to 12 applications are free then u gotta pay for them. he tried in many fields because he had a year intern in anthieostolgy (dont know how to spell it sorry) and a year in orthopedics and many years on his own in internal medicine. thats the one he got into.

we put out around $3,000 in applications and he never got one interview. im telling u,,,he only got in because he begged and did not let up. they almost called security on him becuase he refused to give up and leave when they asked him too.

if he can get a 90 that would be great. most hospitals would grab him up with that score.

The reports done by the NRMP provide all the answers you will need:

http://www.nrmp.org/data/index.html

The scores you need on Step I and II vary by the branch of medicine. Family Practice is easy whereas an academic General Surgery program is near impossible for a foreign grad.

Also, the USMLE is scored as three digits and two digits, and the latter is not a percentile.

This report was the best: http://www.nrmp.org/data/chartingoutcomes2007.pdf

step 1 was 78 and step 2 was 75. passing on both is 75. so now u see why he had problems. even tho they are passing scores the programs still want above 80.

my husband is studying now for his step 3. he takes it tomarrow and thursday. he said he is not ready at all.

when he took his exams it was 12 years ago when there wasnt as much resourses as today. most people today do score in the 90's.

the clinical skills or what ever its called is just a pass or fail score. he did that one a few months ago and passed.

i just hope he passes tomarrows test so he will be all caught up until august when he takes the board certification exam.
