Well, so far these jobs (which you might as well call odd jobs) are through people I work with or know (most likely from working with), so far we haven't heard anything from a regular employer, just getting a little help from friends via personal contacts at this point, but any job is potentially going to lead to good things, especially when all the work experience is in another country, even a low level position is valuable for establishing work history in the US... but I'm hoping she can land a job she'll enjoy vs one that'll be a stepping stone later on.

yeah we think the same, i'll try to see some places in chris's working place, thru friends and colleagues, for internship, if they train me to do what they do i can do fine, i believe anyone who's serious and really want to success can do it, we all will be happy at the end if we find job we enjoy and ofcourse it pays fairly well :)

Awesome. We haven't set a day yet, but we've asked them about the SSN and they said to bring me in with some documents and they can set me up right away. Bill is also under the impression that we can just go to some kinda courthouse and get married in minimal time. So we shall see..

Looking for jobs is going to be stressful.. I'm hoping I can use contacts too.

Don't wait for 2 weeks to apply for a SSC, you might be on the system before like my husband!.

Also I don't get why only if you come thru JFK you get the stamp and can work immediately, I am wondering if you bring that letter on the guides and show it at POE, will they issue you an authorization to work?. Maybe if they don't have a stamp they can write a letter. If I was you i'll give it a try.

A quick question on SSN ... is there any issue with applying for the SSN after our marriage? She has no plans to work right away, so I'd think for our situation it'd be just as easy to do it after and not have to change the name. Are their cons to this I am missing? Thanks!

I used my SSN to open a bank account and have been asked for it nurmerous times without work being the main topic (I even kept the SSN card attached to the card it was sent on and used it as proof of my address which was invaluable). As it is free and mostly hassle-free, why not get one anyway? you dont know when you may need it :D

It's already been said but yeah, you may need it for all kinds of different things, not just work, and it is easy enough to get and doesn't have any fees (that might be easy if you have a local SSA office, I'm not sure if everyone does). Some of the things that might require a SSN, the marriage license itself! (Depends on state), getting a bank account, having your credit checked for any reason (such as signing a lease for an apartment), being added onto a credit card as an authorized user *may* require her to have an SSN, if you want to include her on your health insurance then that too will require an SSN, seems like getting a state ID might have required an SSN but I can't remember. These are just a few of the things off the top of my head, some I personally ran into already (the bank account and health insurance as well as having them modify the lease).

Having proof of address will be necessary for a few different things, so send your woman some mail in her married name at her new home address (and maybe her maiden name) too ASAP.

The temp EAD thing is a bit contested these days... it seems like there has been a concensous (sp?) reached a few times that for a K-1 it's not actually enough to work legally as you lack other requirements of the I-9 form, but there is a current thread that is contradicting that as well... I wouldn't pay too much extra to make that flight through JFK to get the stamp, it may be worthless and you'll need to apply for AOS almost immediately upon arrival (so get married FAST) to have much hope of getting the EAD card before the temp EAD expires...

Fiance and his family are doing most of that! I'm just running around, headless chicken-style, trying to find everything I think I'll need. For the wedding, and otherwise. All that when I'm not studying.

But, yes, I'm actually getting all kinds of excited! :star:

I'm glad we don't need my SSN to get that marriage licence thing in MN, but I'll probably apply very soon after getting into the US. I have to admit we haven't really thought of that yet.. too much, at least.
