trial and error means it will work or not (jams, stovepipes, etc), along with some brands/loads being more accurate than others.

store bought ammo won't cause damage to your gun, blow up, etc unless you try to shoot "+P ammo" in a gun you shouldn't - and i avoid this type of ammo anyways.

brands i don't pay much attention to. types depend on what your intent is. for home defense loads, semi-jacketed hollow points (sjhp) or, if living in an apartment, go with wadcutters (all lead bullet) as they won't penetrate walls as well as a jacketed bullet.

for practice ammo, use ball ammo, along with running a few boxes of the sjhp to make sure it feeds well.

Pretty much just get full metal jacket ammo for target shooting and get hollow points as house ammo. Most name brands are good and look for sales and buy extra. Ammo the last couple of years are crazy priced now.

Mark. Just keep it simple at first going. Find a nice decent functional weapon. Try the grips in your hand and make sure they feel good and right. Many handguns feel awkward in my hands and I will not buy or fire a weapon that feels odd. I suggested a lower priced nice weapon like a Bersa but the others mentioned here are very fine weapons. As for ammo just buy what is on sale from major brands. Full metal jacket and hollow point. I buy winchester mostly at my main store as it is cheaper and when on sale I buy a lot. Some hate that brand and buy otehrs or exotics brands and swear by it but when I ask them why their reasoning is usually moronic or they read an article that extolled that brand and not realizing that the article was bought and paid for by that brand.

Being in Texas then you must be able to go to one of the many gun shows we have here. Almost weekly we have a gun show at one of three places in the Houston area. Go to a couple and peruse at first the many kinds and hold them and get a feel for what is out there and the pricing. I have to go to the next one and match up a handgun to my new wife as she has small hands and mine are too big for her to hold comfortably. I may have to buy one and regrip it for her. Also her Uncle here has now asked me to take him also so he can check them out and maybe me reintroduce him to guns. There has been the last couple of years gangs targeting the Asian community and doing home invasions if they own a business. Right now most Concealed handgun courses are being attended by Asians.

Mark just keep it simple at first and enjoy this wonderful right we have.

Maybe it's just my luck (or unlucky) that the OEMs feed better. Anyway .... you can usually locate an OEM or other high quality magazine at a reasonable price, or comparatively priced to a generic after market.
