But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

A friend's sister never fired a gun before in her life and was afraid. First gun she ever fired was my SAR1, now she wants one.

US Military markings? Mossberg? folding aperture rear sight with a blade front?

if it is .... this is a "sleeper". doesn't look like much yet should be a tack driver. it was a training rifle and has a lapped barrel.

magazines are difficult to find ... though not impossible. brownells is a good place to look.

He's talking about a Mosin Nagant 7.62X54R infantry rifle. The M44 is a carbine version of the 91/30 rifle, with a side-folding cruciform bayonette. The M38 is similar, sans bayo. The 59 is nearly identical to the 38, but not often seen. They are all fixed box fed 5 shot bolt guns with full stocks and upper handguards, similar in utility, application, and function to a 1903 springfield or K98 mauser.

Biggest difference is that they use a rimmed cartridge nearly identical to the 303 british round, which can actually be fired in the MN guns to good effect, but not the other way around, as the 54R is a slightly bigger case in the shoulder area. Some credible sources indicate that the 7.62X54R was actually designed so that british ammo could be fired in the russian gun as a war time expediency. In the 1890's such thinking was not unusual.

They are great rifles, and i have 3. The ammo is recently $.20 a shot, but i bought 7-8K when it was $.04 a round a few years ago. Most of the ammo available is 50's to 70's surp hardball, but sporting ammo is available, and sporterised conversions are easy to arrange, as there is a support industry with drop in synthetic stocks and scope mounts.

I prefer the mauser types, but the MN series is stout and utterly reliable if kept out of serious mud.

SAR1 as in the FNFAL type argentine? if so, another great gun and getting quite valuable since the supply of FAL kits dried up and Imbel receiver importation stopped in 2005.

Hmmm,....I guess, the "Shotgun" idea, is kinda OUT the door.

I mean,....I never shot one,...sooo its very likely I'll be a very bad shot with it.

Handguns are indeed alot easier in tight corners.

The Springfield "XD" or "XDM" caught my attention, due to the three safety's on it;

- thumb safety

- trigger safety

- and grip safefty,....all have to be pressed before you can fire it, with kids in the house,

it just seems to be "right" somehow.

The grip of the XD or XDM is IMO under een better hand/wrist angle then of an Glock anyway.

Personally; I kinda like the "WilsonCombat model; Tactical Super Grade, Armor-Tuff .45ACP,...

however it's running VERY high, infact that specific Wilson buys 4 XDM's with 'Viridian" laser sights!

http://www.wilsoncombat.com/p_tactical_supergrade.asp

To answer the "neighbourhood" question;

-Our neighbourhood, is the quiet kind, brick homes,

about 30 to 60 yards separated of each other.

There is NOT much crime going on yet here,... however,.....

with the current BAD economy going backwards only,...one cannot be careful enough!

As for the "Gunbroker" or used guns idea's,...thanks but no thanks.

I prefer to buy any firearm brand new,....for obvious reasons!

I heard that Hornady ammo is even better then the manufactures own ammo, is that true or false?

gunbroker has been very good to me. the beretta design was tested by the army ordnance department, and has a design life of 250K rounds. they don't go bad. period.

there are lots of makes of +p ammo out there. you don't need it. what you need is familiarisation. find a friend who lives cllose by and understands guns (not just some joe who has one) and get in some practice in handling and shooting skills. if you're a complete novice, stick with the S&W 38 revolver.

Wilsons are finicky creatures built to very tight tolerances, and many of them go back in for failure to feed issues. usually that is caused by poor ammo choice, dirty gun, or "limp wristing". shooting an auto that is built to tight tolerances requires you to hold the gun rigidly during firing so that your body does not absorb the recoil the gun needs to cycle. autos built to looser tolerances can be shot by a child. stay away from the wilson.

at 7.62 it's not a .22 ... thanks for the clarification. Thought I'd inquire if the MN was a typo or if the M44 designation was for the old US M44 bolt .22

Mauser types ... I prefer the 98 action in commercial configuration (safety not sticking out on top of the bolt and no cutout for a stripper clip). the rifles are out there ... FN sold this action for years through various channels. Modifying the bolt safety isn't difficult. Only why do that if you can find one already configured and has factory drill and tap for a scope.

Then there are the pre-64 winchesters ...

Romanian SAR1 is an Semi-auto AKM chambered in 7.62 x 39 (SAR2 is 5.45 and SAR3 is 5.56). They were built to AWB configurations.

It was replaced by the WASR series.

How could I have missed that? I had a SAR1 with russian red furniture some years ago, but traded it to a friend for something else. All of my AK are in original configuration (minus the fun switch) and based on parts kits from various countries. Most of them I built on comercial receivers, but some are built on flats.

The first unpapered flat bent on my jig design was built in early 2003? and documented on the FALFILES.com in a thread posted under same username. People gave me ####### about making an AK receiver from the hood of a 62 dodge dart, but hey, it spawned an industry. After designing and proving the bending jig I shared the design with some production shops, and now at least 4 vendors market it. Prolly 50K unpapered AK rifles out there thanks to this old clown. Who'd have thought?

Try the AKFILES.com or THEAKFORUM.net for some good reading and connections re AK types.

SPOT ON "OKIE2"!

Sooo,....what you all are saying about handgun ammo; that it's sort of a "Trial & Error" thing then?

The "Error" part kind of sounds scary,......what kind of "standard bought-instore-boxes" of "ammo-errors" are there?

Meaning;...

- Will it blowup your gun? (and your hand/face/ect?)

- Damage your barrel?

- Damage something else in your gun?

- Get you OFF target?

You got any tips on most reliable hand gun ammo?

- Brands?

- Types?

Many thanks in advance again! :D
