What type of gun or rifle do you have?

The original question, I belive was what kind of long range rifle and handgun. Many good ones to choose from. Remington 700 bolt action, one of the best, out of the box. semi-auto, browning BAR, in a hunting caliber. semi-auto, AR-15 type- armalite, colt, bushmaster(also Remington) Handguns, Browning HP, (for small hands), CZ99 or derivatve always a good choice. Its a SIG copy, but just as good because of so many police and military contracts. I am sure there are some old gun dealer on here like myself , that would be happy to help you out. Go to gunbroker dot com.

like-minded soul here. dropped the kitchen table liscense when i worked in china, and buying/selling privately since. have about 150 guns right now. still in love with K frame S&W 38's, but have dozens of milsurp autos up to belt feds in 8X57/30 Nato/30 US. too many guns to list, just don't have the time to type.

for a home defense and concealed carry gun for the novice, nothing beats a S&W 38 revolver with 2.5-4" barrel. recently made Taurus (brazil) copies of the smith are nearly as good and a bit cheaper. some smiths come "hammerless" or "enclosed hammer" and these will go round and round inside your jacket side pocket till they are empty. hammer guns will snag on the fabric, as will autoloaders. my carry guns include 1911 45ACP, beretta 92F, SIG P226, walther PP in 380, etc. the bigger autos i wear in a duty holster exposed on the belt (especially on the motorbike (double retention holsters keep guns from klattering down the road), but the 45 goes SOB behind the right kidney and butt forward.

long range shooting rifles are good for 200 yards in pennsylvania, but should get 600 yards in texas. i would suggest a savage 110 in 7mm mag for deer up to 600, and texas sport game animals up to nigali at up to 400 yards, but would insist on a laser rangefinder at over 300 yards, a 4-12 variable, a good rest in your high blind, and lots of realistic practice before your hunt. ranges in the desert are deceptive. things are farther away than they appear to be.

First of all,

For example;

What type of shotgun ammo would be very recommendable for IN HOME protection, with enough nocking down power on ONE hand,

and safe enough, incase of a first "miss" without endangering your kids in the next room on the OTHER hand?

And what kind of shotgun gauge will be better;

- .410?

- 20Ga?

- 12Ga?

- or?

What is besides a larger clip capacity and $150,- more expensive XDM, the major difference inbetween the Springfield "XD" & "XDM"?

I read something about a "Matchgrade" barrel,.....what the heck does that mean?!?!?

And last but not least,...what do you recommend-for "home protection",.....

-a 4", 4.5" or 5" barrel handgun?

- 9mm, .40, or what caliber?

-And what type of ammo has the best knockdown power?

Then there is also "Matchgrade" ammo,.....what the heck is besides the price a box the difference?!?!?!?

Thanks in advance.

shotguns are not good for home defense unless you are well practiced and in a detached house without children. they just get too messy otherwise, and don't handle well in doorways/hallways at o'dark 30, anyway. if you insist on a shotgun, buy a pump with 18" barrel in 20 gauge, and load it with #4 birdshot like you would use for ducks. at 7 yards all of the shot will be in a group about 2" diameter and will go halfway through anybody you shoot before making a complete blender mix out of their internals. they will prolly die where they fall, with a center of mass hit.

the springfield XD series is overrated and a recent fad. they are OK, but not very good guns. look in your local shops for a beretta 92F in used condition. these sell all day long for $400, and are what the US army carries. the italian made guns are very nice and the guns made in marlyand are made in the contract factory that produces for our GIs.

buy this one with mags and holster for $375 if you are willing to create a user account on gunbroker:

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=124411524

you can find a dealer by zip code search who will receive and transfer to you for 10-30$.

use standard 9mm jacketd bullet ammo. if you use hollowpoints, shoot 2 mags full rapid fire to test for jams before believing in them. beretta's are good for this stuff. match grade ammo is marketing hype.

neither the shotgun or 9mm load will penetrate body armour, so if you are in a high crime area with a history of "home invasions" by fellows in fake cop tactical, get an AR15 instead. better yet, move.

Hmmm,....I guess, the "Shotgun" idea, is kinda OUT the door.

I mean,....I never shot one,...sooo its very likely I'll be a very bad shot with it.

Handguns are indeed alot easier in tight corners.

The Springfield "XD" or "XDM" caught my attention, due to the three safety's on it;

- thumb safety

- trigger safety

- and grip safefty,....all have to be pressed before you can fire it, with kids in the house,

it just seems to be "right" somehow.

The grip of the XD or XDM is IMO under een better hand/wrist angle then of an Glock anyway.

Personally; I kinda like the "WilsonCombat model; Tactical Super Grade, Armor-Tuff .45ACP,...

however it's running VERY high, infact that specific Wilson buys 4 XDM's with 'Viridian" laser sights! :thumbs:

http://www.wilsoncombat.com/p_tactical_supergrade.asp

To answer the "neighbourhood" question;

-Our neighbourhood, is the quiet kind, brick homes,

about 30 to 60 yards separated of each other.

There is NOT much crime going on yet here,... however,.....

with the current BAD economy going backwards only,...one cannot be careful enough!

As for the "Gunbroker" or used guns idea's,...thanks but no thanks.

I prefer to buy any firearm brand new,....for obvious reasons!

I heard that Hornady ammo is even better then the manufactures own ammo, is that true or false?

I'd take a 12 gauge pump loaded with 00 buck for home defense.

I have a black belt...that's all I need.

:lol: You'd have to be fast, like Neo in the Matrix to dodge bullets. Buckshot would be even harder.
