No offense but it is very doubtful that those (pictured) shots are the results of a new shooter at 50 yards - even scoped... :unsure:

i dunno, i shot a .22 unscoped at 14 and was probably able to hit coins too at that range, although i didn't try it. the grouping on the target was pretty darn good though.

my .22 rifles are target versions ... aperture rear sight and globe front (except for one old gov't training rifle) and can still hit the targets at 50 yards with precision at 50 yards (no scopes on these ... yet). not looking forward to the day when I can't see the target ... guess this means the local eye doc will always have a customer.

A few handguns, (one target .22, two carry) Assorted long guns including shotgun, .22LR, AR, and my so-far un-shot WWII Mauser.

On a somewhat related note, when Patricia first visited me here in the states, one of the things on our list of things to do was hit the range. She loved it!

Took my new wife to the range last week and she hated it.

I also have a 98 german mauser. It has a .300 s barrel Have not ever fired it much. I doubt it is worth too much money.

The original question, I belive was what kind of long range rifle and handgun. Many good ones to choose from. Remington 700 bolt action, one of the best, out of the box. semi-auto, browning BAR, in a hunting caliber. semi-auto, AR-15 type- armalite, colt, bushmaster(also Remington) Handguns, Browning HP, (for small hands), CZ99 or derivatve always a good choice. Its a SIG copy, but just as good because of so many police and military contracts. I am sure there are some old gun dealer on here like myself , that would be happy to help you out. Personally for newbies I usually just steer them toward a bersa. They are very good weapons and comparable to any makers and are a lot cheaper. I now have a 9mm bersa and it is a fine weapon. I have shot others and they are very accurate and reliable.

So far, just a Glock 30 .45 caliber pistol. Next would be a pistol with a smaller grip and caliber for Lai, followed by a long gun.

It's impressive, huh? :thumbs:

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

In my 10+ years of instructing ... some people listen well and quickly learn to apply the mechanics when they're comfortable (right firearm/caliber combination) and perform quite well for being a "newbie" to the experience.

For Mark ... nice shootin tex!

First of all,

Thank you for all your replies!

WOW,....5 pages within 24Hours,....thats sooo COOL!

My apolgies for reacting quite late,......as replies were made,...I went and looked up yall's gun/rifles/shotguns/ect, to see the spec's of each.

However, some "spec's" really sound like "abra-ca-dabra" to me?!?!? :blush:

Also VERY COOL, is that some people on here really have a serious collection of firearms :o:D:thumbs: , and seem to know "what" they are talking about!

Which brings me to the following question; can I add you all;

- "charles!"

- "Natty Bumppo"

- "SMOKE" as friends?

Because it seems like I got quite ALOT of catching up to do, on all the spec's and what it ACTUALLY means for you as an user/buyer!

Also,...a friend told me, that before you buy any firearm, you have to choose FIRST what kind of ammo you want to use.

Because of the different ammo; ballistics / behavior / prices, to each and everyone of them.

But then, i'm basically back to square ONE,......the choices in ammo is even more variable then firearms!

For example;

What type of shotgun ammo would be very recommendable for IN HOME protection, with enough nocking down power on ONE hand,

and safe enough, incase of a first "miss" without endangering your kids in the next room on the OTHER hand?

And what kind of shotgun gauge will be better;

- .410?

- 20Ga?

- 12Ga?

- or?

What is besides a larger clip capacity and $150,- more expensive XDM, the major difference inbetween the Springfield "XD" & "XDM"?

I read something about a "Matchgrade" barrel,.....what the heck does that mean?!?!?

And last but not least,...what do you recommend-for "home protection",.....

-a 4", 4.5" or 5" barrel handgun?

- 9mm, .40, or what caliber?

-And what type of ammo has the best knockdown power?

Then there is also "Matchgrade" ammo,.....what the heck is besides the price a box the difference?!?!?!?

Thanks in advance.

Just out of curiosity!

I'm a gun-newbie and shot fairly good for the very first time (see pic below).

Dimes, quarters, and thumbtags are fairly easy to shoot.

FIRSTTIMESHOOTER50YARDS.jpg

However, i'm looking to buy some really good hand guns or long range rifles.

One problem though, the choices out there are so enormous, that I'm kind of lost in what to pick.

So,....what do you recommend for long range target shooting and home defense?

In addition;

- What type of gun / rifle or shotgun do you have?

- What caliber?

- What kind of ammo do you use & why?

- And what do you use it for?

- Does anybody know anything about the Mossberg 500 Road Blocker below?

This gun>>>G50591.JPG

Thanks in advance.

I have a super soaker water pistol,does that count ?

certainly, you can add me. now to address other parts:

- Also,...a friend told me, that before you buy any firearm, you have to choose FIRST what kind of ammo you want to use.

i don't agree with that. imo it depends on what the application is. for example, if you live in an apartment, you don't want to have a 12 gauge or .44 magnum for home defense as they will quite easily go thru the walls. if you live out in the country with large wild animals like mountain lions around then those may be a valid choice. just as you don't use an elephant gun to hunt rabbits with, you don't use a .22 to hunt bear with. it's all about what you intend to do with it and the area you intend to use it in.

when getting a firearm, also plan on getting a common caliber. for shotguns, 12 gauge, followed by 20, is the most common, and it reflects on price too. i recommend a 12 gauge for a shotgun due to the capabilities of it plus the ammo for it is as cheap or cheaper than the other gauges (16, 20, 28, and .410 bore). also keep in mind that a shotgun may not be your best choice for in home use due to it not having a great degree of accuracy with the spread of the pellets and the considerable damage it will cause in your dwelling. there is also the problem of it being so large and difficult to maneuver around corners.

in general, i'd recommend a .380 or 9mm pistol for apartment dwellers, depending on how far apart the houses are - a 9mm, .38 or .45 for individual home owners, and a .40 cal - .45 for home owners with a decent amount of distance between houses. all brick homes would make me lean towards the ones starting with a 4 in the latter two cases.

not up to speed on Springfield "XD" & "XDM" - i'd have to read about them first. a match grade barrel or ammo is just that, a barrel or ammo you can shoot competition matches with that result in closer grouping of rounds. in the case of home defense, it won't make much difference.
