Yep. The key is getting an EAD first to get your California ID card. Once she has her EAD, she can also take her written test, and once she passes that, she can get her learners permit. My wife is just about expired on her learners permit and not ready to take the driving test yet. Soon maybe. We went out a couple times yesterday for her to practice. Be patient, if she has never driven before.

I have been driving around phoenix and nearby town here in AZ.

Can i use the EAD receipt in applying for my driving license. I just applied my AOS (w/ EAD, AP) and hopefully would get my NOA1 by next week. My I-94 is due to expire in March 23, 2009. Plan to get learner's permit first and when i receive my GC, i would do my driving test.

I don't want to loss that freedom of going anywhere i want, anytime i want. :crying:

In California, they need your EAD first. They have to make copies of that, and then send the application to Sacramento for approval. Takes about two months. Each state is different.

That's what they say. I got my Cali DL exactly one week after my behind the wheel test.

Congratulations! I guess they are speeding things up.

Marie and I went to the DMV Friday, and I thought, "Oh, no! The line's out the door." I was surprised once we hit the information counter, how fast our number was called, and when I look toward the door, the line was gone! Amazing! Efficiency at the DMV.

I used to have an international drivers license from the Philippines but as soon as i became a permanent resident my license was no longer valid. I think its only intended for visitors and tourist. I also tried going to DMV using only my passport and got rejected because my I-94 was almost expired. So I waited for my green card and went there again. No hassle, no line. I arrived at 7:30AM (it was in Fremont, CA.) was first in line and they were nice to me. I only had to present my greencard that's all. Then I took the eye exam (which was merely reading letters from a distance) passed it.

My friend gave me a CA drivers handbook (but you can also download it from their website) I studied it religiously for 1 week. I passed the test and got only 3 mistakes lol. It's a bit tricky and I must say i was brain dead in the morning. I couldn't picture it out (i mean the road situation).

BUT... I didn't notice they made a mistake about my height. I am only 5 feet and I put there 5'0.. guess what? they put 5'10 on both learners permit and i think also state ID. Now this is my dilemma. I went back and said I should be able to change it when i have my behind-the-wheel test. I forgot to ask them about the height on my state ID. Oh well... I'm thinking to just wait til it arrives on mail and go there and have them fix it.

My husband is making fun of me that i still have enough time to grow! lol (its been a sensitive topic)

Your Phil. DL is valid in Cali. I am not sure for how long but I used mine fro two months. Check the Cali DMV website.

My wife was able to use her Philippine DL also, but she did ask to speak with a supervisor after going to several CA DMV offices. They gave her a temp. drivier's license and was valid for 3 months, by the time it was expiring, she already received her GC and used it in applying for the CA DL. Check your local DMV website and office. Getting car insurance with a philippine DL is another story.
