Rick, The IO officer simply want to see that your tax returns are filed, and, if appropriate, that the are "filed jointly". They are checking that you have filed returns, they don't go through the returns to check them - they are the USCIS, not th IRS :-)

I would think just showing the top third of your 1040 should be enough, shows the IRS label with both your names on and the joint return box checked. Submitted that with the I-751 with no problems, by overlapping three years on my copying machine. But did send complete copies of returns without the W-2's. Still not enough for my wife's IO during her interview, wanted all the W-2's and 1099's as well for whatever reason. Did bring those along, thank goodness.

You never know.

Hey, if the IRS was cool with your tax return and didn't give you any trouble then the USCIS won't. What they want is for you to not owe any taxes to the government, that's all. If there is a problem with your exemptions the IRS will eventually contact you about it and they will let you know you need to show them proof. It's not the place of the USCIS to decide whether you need to pay more taxes or not.
