How long will my SS# take to arrive?

I checked boxes 33 a and b on application form DS-230 requesting that a Social Security number be assigned to me. That form was submitted to the Sydney Consulate last October with the rest of my immigration paperwork. I arrived in the US on February 24, 2009. Does anyone know how long this number will take to arrive? I think I was told by my interviewer in Sydney that it would be about a week after I got here, but now I can't remember if that's it or not! I am debating going into my local Social Security office but I don't want to mess things up if a number is on its way.

I too checked the box on the DS-230 form and at POE the CBP officer told me to wait 4-6 weeks. Mine didn't take that long to come (see my signature for dates) but what may have helped speed up the process was me going down to the SS office shortly after my arrival (about 10 days). I presented my passport and they were able to look me up on the system. First to make sure that my brown envelope has been processed by the USCIS, and secondly to see if a SSN number had already been assigned. It was and they gave me a print out of my number and told me to wait for my card to arrive in the mail.

If you're anxious to receive it and don't really have much going on during the day, there's no harm in going down to your local SS office to ask about it.
