W're going through K1 process. I'd like to add my fiance to my medical benefits from work when she arrives here. I am a state of New York employee. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many will not add until your fiance(e) is your spouse... but the difenitive answer will be governed by your employers particular plan design

YMMV

Wait 2 weeks after entry to the USA, then apply for fiancee's SSN, the SSN will be useful for adding your fiancee to your insurance.

Definitely check with your employer first since they all have their own rules.

My plan in Vermont "added them" before they arrived (wife and sons) but it was not effective until the first day of the month following our marriage. I had to fax a copy of the marriage certificate. New York State may be different, check with your employers insurer or Human Resources.

This has everything to do with your medical insurance and employer. Some will cover only spouses while others will cover domestic parternerships.

If you find she can not be covered by your insurance until after marriage, there are several short term insurance companies out there that will cover her for about 30-40 a month until it does.

good luck
