Hi all,

Is there any difference between the receipt number and the NVC casenumber. My father had filed for an I 130 petition for me and he received the notice of action I 797 with a receipt number which was like LINxx-xxx-xxxxx. The petition was approved later on and was moved to NVC. Will they issue a new case number now. If so, is that going to be different from the above LIN format?

Thanks

Ska

The National Visa Center will send you a letter with a case number. It will start with 3 letters denoting the consulate/embassy that will handle your case. The case number and your receipt number are unrelated and will be different.

The receipt number is the number the USCIS gives you to keep track of your petition. Once it is approved, they send it to the NVC and they will give the approved petition a case #. So receipt numbers are assigned by the USCIS and case numbers are assigned by the NVC.
