Actually, I think the whole plan to place Rush as the "face" of the GOP is very cleaver. (he is not an attractive guy)

Right now the only top Republican image which most people recognize is John McCain, it's hard to paint him as the next villain.

Of course this highlights the phonyness of Obama, and his charade of doing politics a "new way" but Obama is past the phase of angelic promises and onto doing what furthers his agenda.

In fact he already trashed his "most ethical administration in history" pledge by the tax cheats and

corp insiders he has places in key positions.

Its less about how he looks and more about how he acts. He is an angry white guy and not afraid to play that role. If he is seen as the public face of the republicans, then the Republicans will become known as the party of angry white men. Which will hugely limit its appeal outside of that group.

The Democrats don't need to do much, Rush and the Republicans are pretty much doing it to themselves. Just give it a bit more media exposure, and Republicans probably wont get one of their own elected as President for the next 20 years.

Don't say that, Justashooter and his mighty militia are a hair's trigger away from a coup as things stand!

Mind you, I doubt it'll succeed unless he unveils his secret militia uniforms.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

There were a few people who did that in Britain - they would infiltrate daytime TV talk shows and make up fake (ridiculous) news stories and get naiive celebrities and politicians to sign up to anti-drug programs for made-up drugs.

People like Rush would be lost at sea with that stuff.

That's why they have call screeners. But, every now and then, someone sneeks though. Rush prefers monologue, which is why I don't enjoy his shows.

monologue = rant.

Although we could call in seemingly to be of his rant-like ilk.

Funny you mention that... I heard someone say exactly the same thing at lunch today.

I listen to Michael Savage from time to time - but that guy is seriously out there and there's only so much I can listen to before it gets old.

Scary that his callers take him so seriously. If we had people like that on the air waves in the UK - guerila satirists would be bombarding them with calls.

most right wingers dont take him seriously Paul. Your right the guy is way out there and ironically he is from Berkley

I never thought he was mainstream - the guy is obviously off his rocker. But people call him up on air all the time to praise him unequivocally.

Its just strange to me that those guys always seem so incredibly fist-shakingly angry. I can never figure out why - its just a never-ending tirade of cartoonish stereotypes, unconnected to anything that's actually going on.

In 20 yrs?

Obviously you need to take another look at the charts which show shifting demographics in a number of areas.

..... unless you are predicting some huge, future shift away from the dependency on social programs.

If Obama is successful, which he probably will be. Some of the pieces of the Democrats agenda is going to be here to stay. Like it or not.

With that, its going to take awhile for the Republicans to adapt. The current party leaders are still stuck on a message that is becoming increasingly irrelevant. Good thing for the party, most of these people are old and several are not seeking reelection when their term is up.

I said 20 years as a ballpark. It could be sooner or it could take longer depending what happens. If there is a concerted effort to adapt a new message, it could be very quick. But likely its going to be driven by a slower generational change.

The party will have to adapt, or a new one will form up to take its place. The question is how quickly will that happen?

I thought he was from Rio Linda:

Best loudmouth-ful The Rush Limbaugh Burger at Bowinkles

Long since Rush Limbaugh ditched the Sacramento AM dial for the nationally syndicated airwaves, the conservative sage has mocked Rio Linda as a backward little town full of slack-jawed yokels. "Or, for those of you in Rio Linda … " is Limbaugh's standard transition into dumb speak, which he dusts off whenever something must be translated for the layperson. So, maybe it's fitting that Bowinkles, a lonely little burger stand in the town Limbaugh derides, offers its own left-handed honor for the man who makes the place sound like a haven for toothless illiterates. The Rush Limbaugh Burger, $6.99, comes on a kaiser roll with bacon, cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and two half-pound ground-beef patties. (For those of you in Rio Linda, that's one pound of meat.) "You supply the attitude, we'll supply the pound of beef," reads the slogan on the drive-through menu.

912 Oak Street in Rio Linda, (916) 991-9996.

According to the infallible Wiki, he was born in:

was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri,

Limbaugh graduated from Cape Central High School, in 1969. His father and mother wanted him to attend college, so he enrolled at Southeast Missouri State University. He dropped out after two semesters and one summer; according to his mother, "he flunked everything", even a modern ballroom dancing class.[5] As she told a reporter in 1992, "He just didn't seem interested in anything except radio."[8]

;)

I wonder if he's likely to appear on Strictly Come Dancing, to make up for his misspent youth?

Half my brain tied behind my back just to make it fair.

Talent on loan from GOD.

Sorry to say this, I don't think he [black pro football quarterback Donovan McNabb] has been that good from the get-go. I think what we've had here is a little social concern in NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well, black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well. There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn't deserve . . . [Amid the ensuing controversy, Limbaugh resigned his position as the "voice of the fan" commentator and ESPN accepted]

Feminism was established to allow unattractive women easier access to the mainstream.

[on "free trade"] If we are going to start rewarding no skills and stupid people, let the unskilled jobs, let the kind of jobs that take absolutely no knowledge whatsoever to do, let stupid and unskilled Mexicans do that work.

[on the US role in post-war Iraq] Our armed forces shouldn't be over there. They're good at killing people and blowing things up, not peace-keeping.

There are more American Indians alive today than there were when Columbus arrived or at any other time in history. Does this sound like a record of genocide? I love the women's movement. Especially when I am walking behind it.

Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?

I'm appalled at people who simply want to look at all this abhorrent behavior and say, "Hey, you know, we can't control it anymore. People are going to do drugs anyway. Let's legalize it." It's a dumb idea. It's a rotten idea, and those who are for it are purely, 100 percent selfish.

When you strip it all away, Jerry Garcia destroyed his life on drugs. And yet he's being honored, like some godlike figure. Our priorities are out of whack, folks.

These tough sentencing laws were instituted for a reason. The American people, including liberals, demanded them. Don't you remember the crack cocaine epidemic? Crack babies and out-of-control murder rates? Liberal judges giving the bad guys slaps on the wrist? Finally we got tough, and the crime rate has been falling ever since, so what's wrong?

There's nothing good about drug use. We know it. It destroys individuals. It destroys families. Drug use destroys societies. Drug use, some might say, is destroying this country. And we have laws against selling drugs, pushing drugs, using drugs, importing drugs. And the laws are good because we know what happens to people in societies and neighborhoods, which become consumed by them. And so if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up.

Victory is victory, and it's not determined by a timetable. World War II did not go by as quickly as you think.
