When my boyfriend gets back to the states from his deployment, he is also getting out of the military, and wont have a job. He is going to be moving back in with his family for a few months until he gets back on his feet and finds another job, etc (hence why its going to take us a while to get married and file the CR1). Im going to be seeing him this spring when he lands from overseas for his home-coming for a couple of weeks.

Anyhow, I'll be driving back up to Canada with him so he can meet my family during his couple of weeks between jobs. Ill be driving up with him.

Im worried about his ties back to the U.S though and what to say at the POE in Canada.. even though its our intention to get married next February, and then apply for myself to move to the states.

Has anyone else gone through this? Any advice?

im SUPER nervous of a 20 hour drive and him being turned away at the POE... then me having a hard time gettin back int he US POE to help him drive back home... Id hate to see him drive alone.

Im paranoid! I know... I got a problem with anxiety lol

All the times my fiancee came to Canada to visit me, by road or air, he was never asked for ties to US or did have any either. I mean he had ties but didn't bring them as proof except to show his return ticket but was never asked. I don't think that Canada Customs is *too* worried about Americans staying in Canada illegally.... If you have nothing to show as proof of ties, all you can do is hope for the best....

I dated my husband for 3 years while I was in College in the USA. We visited my family in Canada many, many time and never had a problem. Even when we were engaged (before I knew anything about immigration laws) the officer would ask, "How do you know each other?" We always just said, "We're engaged" and still no issue at the border coming into Canada or going back to the USA.

Since we've been married (15 months now) my husband has come to visit me over 20 times and he had not had an issue even once. He just tells the plain honest truth, and usually just gets a sympathetic "Oh wow" from the officer and carries on his way.

I wouldn't worry if I were you :)

ETA: I'm the Canadian and he's the American.

Just to echo what the others have said, we haven't had any issues either. My fiance crossed the border many times in the last 4 years and half the time they don't even ask him for ID, let alone prof of ties to the USA. As you probably know, Canadian immigration is fairly lax. If they raised some questions I would just have him say you are applying to come live in the US in the near future and they probably won't bother questioning it.
