POE Orlando

Well, I will finally be flying home next month and I was just wondering if anyone went through Orlando as a POE and how their experience was. Further more I'd like to know how they treat pets there. I'm taking a cat with me and I think I've read here a long time ago that they put animals on the conveyor belt along with all the other luggage? We will be contacting the airport about it, but maybe someone on here has first hand experience with Orlando.

:goofy:

Sorry, I'm a bit confused. Is "home" in Orlando or the Netherlands? I fly in and out of Orlando every few weeks and have never once seen an animal on the conveyor belt. Not quite sure what you mean.

Err.....flying home to my sweet in the States :blink::wacko::blush: . I was just wondering how they handle pets in Orlando. Whether you pick them up at a certain place or not and also how long it takes to get through immigration with the sealed envelop over there.

Ed, not sure about Orlando but we are flying into Sanford with our Rottweillers and we have to go and collect them once we have gone through immigration, it is in a different area of the arrivals. I should imagine that Orlando will be pretty much the same

How long it will take for you to collect your cat depends on how long you will be held up at immigration ;)

Not sure what the airlines are doing these days about extreme temperatures and flying pets but you are talking about flying pets during one of the hottest months in Florida. Might want to check with your airline that they will transport them at the time of your flights. If you have an international flight it might be different but if you have a connecting domestic flight, they have fairly strict regulations for hot weather and flying pets.

This is from a pet information site:

We have gathered the major airlines phone numbers listed below along with a short description of their policies. Airlines now have strict new restrictions on traveling with your pet during the summer months. Due to recent government regulations requiring airlines to disclose the amount of deaths among pets in cargo holds, the airlines have cracked down on when animals can safely travel. In cargo holds and on the tarmac during the summer months, pets are subjected to life threatening heat and many die from heat stroke. To combat this, most major airlines have instituted a policy of no pets allowed during the months from June - September. Your best defense against this policy maybe to book evening or overnight flights. Below are a list of the major airlines and their new policies regarding pets. If you have travel plans with your pet, be sure to call your airlines to find out their specific rules and regulations. Note that you are still allowed to have a carry-on pet (small pets).

American Airlines (800-433-7300) No pets from May15 to Sept 15 and no night flights either.

Continental Airlines (800-575-3335) Pet safe policy for cargo pets: They have pet tracking available, pets cannot be exposed to temperatures above 85 degrees. They have limited travel available between June 1 and Sept. 4. May be able to travel on night flights.

Delta Airlines (800-221-1212) Call for special reservations in cargo for your pet. With special reservations, your pet will be kept in an air conditioned area until flight time. Your pet cannot be checked as regular baggage. Call Delta's number above for the cargo number in your area for special pet reservations.

Northwest Airlines (800-225-2525) $75 per direction, pet will be delayed due to hot weather and may not arrive with you. Can travel on night flights.

Southwest Airlines (800-435-9792) Does not transport animals at anytime.

TWA Airlines (800-221-2000) No pet cargo from June 1 - Sept 5, no night flights either.

United Airlines (800-241-6522) No pets in cargo June 15 - Sept 7 and no night flights either

Thanks for the links sadie

I'll be on an international flight from Amsterdam straight to Orlando. My travel agent has contacted the airline and they told her that if my cat is the only pet that will be on that flight I can take her with me on board and they will put her in a special place in the cabine. However on their website they say something different . I'll be finding out either tomorrow or the day after if she is allowed to be on the flight. I really hope I won't be held up at immigration in Orlando too long, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see

Val, Dave just flew thru Sanford for the first time and said it was wonderful. I didn't particularly like waiting outside for him to clear customs, but whatever.....it's just an fyi in case it's your first time flying into Sanford.

Ed, no clue about the pet situation..sorry can't help :(

Hi there,

I am surprised that you are being allowed to fly an animal at this time of year. Most airlines restrict if the temp is 85F (75F for snub nosed cats like Persians) at the departing location or the destination. Most travel agents know zip so you may want to check with the actual cargo department of the airline. Also many airlines have a heat embargo on june to september and most transatlantic flights i know don't allow pets in the cabin.

I flew my Border collie pup with American Airlines Dublin to Chicago to Dallas and i highly recommend them over any other airline.

You must make sure you have your cat vaccinated up to date with the rabies vaccine (which living in the Netherlands i'm sure you do as its the law there) and you also have to get a health certificate from your vet before you fly the cat.

Which airline are you flying with?

Groetjes,

Kat

I'm flying with Martinair since they do direct flights onto Orlando. I have never flown with them before since I have never done direct flights on my previous trips. My cat had all her shots and everything else that is required and I will get the health certificate 3 days before I leave (question, does it have to be in english or is a filled out clinical examination page in her animal pasport enough?). To be honest I never thought about this being the hotest time of the year and now of course I am like, why didn't I think about this before.....

Might be a good idea to call your international Airline and question them about the temperature restrictions and policies. The worry would be if your pet is in the hold as cargo or checked baggage, the amount of time after landing that it would be waiting to be unloaded and the time on the tarmac in excessive heat. It might also be a good idea to alert cabin personnel that you have a pet in the hold and that you are very concerned about it. If your pet is in cabin with you, that's a different story.
