Feeling miffed at work

I have been in this job now for almost 2 months and I really like it. Last week the manager told me I had to go on a days training/seminar on Infection Control...which is fine....but then I hear that he is not going to pay me for that day, so I have to miss a whole days pay for something he wants me to do.

I dunno....I have worked in the healthcare field for over 20 years and have attended many training days and always been paid, this doesn't seem right to me.

I have to look into what legal rights I have if I refuse to go on this training without pay....I really don't want to lose my job over this, but a days pay is a days pay and I have a wedding to pay for!

My SO is fuming to the point that I wish I hadn't told him

Am I being unreasonable??

You are not being unreasonable at all hun. I can't believe that he can even get away without paying you!!! Is it possible that you can pull him aside and talk to him reasonably or is he one of those sorts that it would be like talking to a brick wall?? At the end of the day, you need to think about whether or not this job is suitable for you if this is how it is going to be. I have personally never heard of NOT getting paid for training that a company wants you to do. My advice would be to try talking to your boss, see if you can get anywhere, if you can't, start looking for another job but don't quit that one until you have secured one.

I am shaking my head on this one. Never have I heard of such a thing.

GOodluck hun!!!

No Dawn I do not think you are being unreasonable at all - in fact I think your boss has a down right cheek to tell you you are going on a days training but you will not be paid :o

Are you in a union, if so ask the rep or phone ACAS to check the situation. I know that in the past whenever I had to do any trianing I was always paid. What are of health do you work in??

I tired to find something helpful at the ACAS site but it doesn't look like its covered; probably best to ask them direct by phone or speak to a rep if you have one at work. I can't see though that as you are required to take this course BY your employer that they can refuse to pay for going - from what you put it doesn't seem this is a course that is 'optional' as in 'something you can refuse' - and is directly linked to your current job and will ALSO benefit your employer.

If you work for a private firm they are probably trying it on and see if you will swallow it - I think there is legiaslation in place already that allows training to be taken - at least from what I COULD find it appears that way. It's been a LONG time since I was a union rep for the then CPSU but my hackles still rose when I read your post, lol.

If they refuse to pay then refuse to go - if they threaten you with a wage cut because you refused to take the course - you will have a case against them for discriminatory working practices.

Without causing a big fuss, I would tell him that you believe that you should be paid for that day's training or at least have it as an "optional" training. If you don't want to attend the training without pay, you don't have to. Anything that pertains to your job, unless it was specified previous to obtaining the job, should be paid.

I definately don't think you're being unreasonable at all Welshcookie. I've very rarely heard of any companies over here in th UK sending their employees on Training days WITHOUT pay(I would've it's even less common in the US). I don't know what the legality of it all is, but I'm sure you are entitled to pay. That's just wrong.

If you're in a union, I'd speak to them for sure and find out what you can do. I can understand about you not wanting to lose your job over this, but you should certainly say something. You're not one who decided to go for training, it's your boss who wants you to go. Sounds like he's being a cheap skate! :P

I've worked for employers who liked to pull that kind of #######. They have a funny way of making their problems yours. The fact that they're not paying you is bad enough - but you're actually going to make a loss (last I heard public transport / gasoline wasn't free). There's a principle to uphold there ;)

Take my current position - Since my wife and I moved to the east coast, I've been temping with a manhattan agency. I was lucky enough to score (right off the bat) a job that I really want, and I have now been doing the job for the last couple months and quite well by all accounts. I get told the other day that I'm going to be out of a job come the end of the month, because the company wants to hire someone straight out of uni.

Apparently the reasoning is that they don't want to pay the fees to the agency to break a temp contract, regardless of the fact that its likely going to cost an equivalent amount of time and money to train this new person and get them up to speed. I was lucky enough to have the outgoing job holder to train me directly, this new person isn't even going to have that...

Noone said the hiring decisions of large companies had to make sense...

You should get paid.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. Thanks for all your comments......

I did go and see the manager this morning and he confirmed that the company will not pay for the training day. So as I have just finished a 12 day stint covering for staff sickness, I told him that I was no longer prepared to cover anymore shifts over and above my own. He got back to me later in the day and told me that the owner had agreed to pay me my usual days wage for that day :D:P

I work for a small, private care home, they are doing alot of work on it at the moment and I think they are looking for any ways to save cash...

But I will keep a look out for it on my payslip at the end of the month
