The Science of Airplanes

I know I'd shell out 350 dollars just to sit across

From you

Sharing a smile and a plate of iffy Chinese food –

And until I get 350 dollars, and another 350 dollars to

take you home (and another 350 dollars to go with you),

I am gonna keep building airplanes, hoping they’ll fly

On paper wings and whims.I almost painted clouds on my ceiling today.That one's a Tiger-Moth biplane for all the times I wish you were holding me

(holding you);

That one's a B-10 for all the times I was supposed to be

reading an 18th century novel about romance, but I figured thinking of you

was enough for the test;And that one’s the Blackbird.

Rigged up with rubberbands

Put together with crappy instructions and glue.It’s the fastest.I climbed to the top of the control tower and looked down on where there weren’t planes

Before;

I stretched back my hand filled with a rickety model plane

Letting loose like a whirlwind,

A scream burst out from the back of the Blackbird,

Shaped like my thoughts,And I jumped on as it disappeared into the horizon.

I did it.

A two person rocket-train in air,

So fast no one’s invented it yet But it was like the first one,

Made of paper and lumber,

That couldn’t quite go fast enough to turn back time.But your wind-burned face is more beautiful than flight,

More beautiful than science and aeronautics,Since its conception,

It took a war to add metal to its wings;

24-more-years to cross oceans;

36 from the first day to look past propellers to the glow of jetfire;

66 for crying-eyes to gaze down upon the world we began forgetting;

And 104 to get me to care that from here to there is.....you.

And airplanes.

If I ever figure it out,

The science of airplanes,

Clouds will learn to catch up

PS International Women's Day is the best!!! Two years ago my husband bought me marigolds and took me out to dinner. He plans on buying his mom flowers this year since Albanian mother's don't let there little boys take them out to dinner.

Let's see, 600 miles back and forth to O'Hare at 58 cent per mile, that's 348 bucks, another at least a couple hundred more for parking, and even more for staying a motel. And that's before we even got in the airplane.

Maybe we should be making paper airplanes, too.
