You could always reuse bags.
Not the ones from Wal-Mart, toss a can in there and they split, much prefer our other grocery stores that ask paper or plastic, always say, paper. Use to use those paper bags for some blind dates I was on, can't use plastic, would kill them, then really be in deep trouble.
The checkout bags even from W-M do work well as binliners; unfortunately, the ones sold as W_M's generic don't.

So we sit at our computers for hours a day burning who knows how much electricity, but yet, we're supposed to save the earth by cutting out water bottles?

This kind of ####### really irritates me.

I triple them up to put my dog ####### in, good for something. We also have a requirement to put our garbage in a clear plastic bag, so we can't sneak in any leaves or grass clippings. But also have the option just to set our plastic garbage can out, many do, but the wind blows them everywhere and you end up with a very stinking garbage can. Our police department sells clear plastic bags, but use the excuse they only sell the 33 gallon size, where I need the 40 gallon size so those won't fit. But the real reason is they charge five times as much. With just my wife and me, only have about a half a bag per week, we try our best not to buy and pay for garbage. For recyclables, we are suppose to wash those and put those in a separate container, they prefer for us to use paper bags for that. Plastic bottles, tin cans, and aluminum cans. Then a second bag for only clean paper, do not want any food packaging.

For an appliance, TV set, or computer, suppose to drive those to the other side of town and pay them 30 bucks to take it. Wrecking yard was taking this stuff for free, but when they heard the city was charging 30 bucks, they started charging 30 bucks too. Had a water heater to get rid of, cut the jacket off with a metal cutting saw, folded that up with the metal recycling bin. Have a friend that wants the tank, he cuts those into two and sells them for hog drinking containers, so he took that.

Tried to get a law passed whereby anybody that sells garbage, be required to take it back, that's was a worthless effort, but I see HP and others want their way overpriced inkjet cartridges back. Recycling is a racket. Only good Penn and Teller show I have seen on their BS series, was on recycling.

Apples to oranges, slim. I don't know what line of work you do or whether it requires using a computer, but mine does. I used to be a traditional hand drawn animator and I know that process used up way more energy and resources than using a computer to animate with. But again...apples to oranges. All it shows is that if there are reasonable alternatives that could greatly reduce our consumption of oil, why not at least be aware of them? Nobody's sticking a gun to your head and telling you to stop buying bottled water, but at least now you are aware of the cost associated with it, so that the next time you gripe about why our country is so dependent on Foreign Oil, you can look at all the bottled water being consumed.

Actually... I manufacture plastic bags so I'm well aware of how much energy goes into plastic production and processing.

However, the reason we're dependent on foreign oil has nothing to do with the amounts of energy necessary to produce plastic products. If you took away all those reasons, the only thing we'd use oil for is as a raw material in plastic production and maybe some lubrication applications.

In some countries they actually charge you for those bags that we throw away. "You want to carry your groceries home in a plastic bag? That'll be 10 cents, please." As I understand it, several communities are starting to charge a plastic bag surcharge. Just another waste of taxpayer dollars and govt. officials' time.

Places where I shop that charge for plastic bags tend to have cheaper merchandise than other places.

I reuse them when emptying the litter box and for cleaning up dog poo.

Quite true (including double-entendre) especially of Sav-a-Lot.
