just bring your I-94 and marriage certificate(so can have your married name on your SSN card but make your that your I-94 is not expired (15 days before it will be expired. coz your only allowed to apply ssn 76 days after your arrival here in the US. otherwise, you'll wait for ur EAD before you can have one.

You know guys, that is what exactly i presented (I-94 and MC) to the woman when i was applying for SSN last Dec. caz I was told by a friend of mine that those are only the papers that was asked to her but I don't know why that woman told me that i need to have my EAD first. Is it bec i arrived here on K3 and our marriage was held in the Philippines? Another thing is that my husband and I noticed that that woman is rude and she didn't even smile at all and she looked at me like i am a criminal

i think i got the answer to my question. i just read this from the guide:

:: For K2, K3, K4 Visa Holders ::

As a holder of a K2, K3 or K4 visa you must first have an EAD from the USCIS. You will be required to

show this to the SSA agency to be eligible to receive a SSN.

To apply for a SSN you will need to go to your local SSA office and bring:

1.The SS-5 form you downloaded and filled out (they have some at the office if you forget).

2.Passport (with the K-2, K-3, or K-4 Visa in it)

3.your valid I-94

4.another form of valid ID (as defined in the SS-5 instructions)

5.A valid EAD

thanks for your time :)

hi pink..

just bring your I-94, MC and passport for identification. and also, bring something a proof that your allowed to apply for an SSN, like print out (article) from their web site or customer service, if ever the SS officer will not allow you or give you an SSN.

ike what i did. i brought a print out from their customer service coz the first i went to SS office they didnt give me SSn coz they said that im not allowed to apply so what i did, i emailed the SS customer service to ask about the eligibility to apply for an SSN and at the same time i tried to search some article that will serve as proof that im qualified to apply.

just make sure also that your I-94 is not yet expired. 15 days prior to expiration date.

All we needed was my wife's passport, we brought in the marriage cert but they said we can't apply using the married name on the SS card until homeland security is notified of the name change... since we need the number to add her to my health insurance, we just went with her maiden name, apparently they have some kind of system that requires the name to match the name with homeland security. She wasn't 100% sure what it took to update that or how long it could take... but it's easy to go back at a later date after filling AOS (in the married name) and get a new card issued in the married name.

They can give you your number 2 days after you apply for it, you have to go there in person, or wait for the card which could take up to two weeks but that's not likely as I understand it.

Strange, I applied for my SSN with my married name about a week after we got married, which was slightly less than a month after my entry into the USA. The officer just looked at my passport, my I-94, visa, certified copy of marriage certificate and said we were good to go. I received my SSN card in the mail about a week and a half later with my new name. It just has a stamp on it that says that I am only eligible for work with an EAD.

On topic though, I just sent my documents via FedEx(press) today directly to the AOS dept in the Chicago office (the 2nd address provided). Because sending an express document envelope that requires a signature to a lockbox just doesn't make sense. xD FedEx guy told me it'll get there Monday afternoon! Yay! :)

Good luck to everyone! :D

About Pink's post..Yes its true..

I applied or tried to for SSN 2 months after i came here in the US thinking my passport and my K3 visa is good enough, but it wasnt. They told me to come back when i already have either EAD or green card.

I guess K1's are different. One of my friends under k1 had her SSN 2 days after they got married and didnt even file for AOS yet. We didnt come from the same state so maybe each state has each own policy also?? Maybe.

hmm.. as what i read and understand on SS website..we (k visa holder) are allowed to apply SSN as long as your i-94 is still valid ( 14 days before the expiry date) or 76 days after your arrival here in the US. i think some SS officer dont knw about the "k" visas.
