Just got back in from trying to do the biometrics early. They had no problems with being early and got it done quickly. In fact they were very nice about it and said that it is good to do it early and they wish more would do so. The people were friendly and patient with my wife.

While at the SS office the lady looked up my wife on the Government database and even showed me my wifes info. She said she had to see if she was ok'ed to work and it showed she was. Not real sure why she has not received the EAD card yet but that made me happy to see it in their database. Pretty much now just wait to receive the cards in the mail now as her case has been moved to the California center so there will be no interview it seems.

This is probably a dumb question, but people keep mentioning social security numbers, why? I thought that they 'gave' you one when you got your green card, and got approved for the AOS? Am i wrong? Please let me knw so i know if i have to start doing more paperwork for my husband, cause i honestly thought they were one and the same thing.

SSN are separate from the green card. You still have to go to a Social Security office and apply for SSN. The reason why social security card is coming up is because before you have a green card the card say that you must show some other proof that you can work in the US. Therefore, after receivng the green card you go back to the Social Security office and get a new social security card that doesn't not required you to show proof as you are now a lawful perm resident.

On another note, some people got SSNs before the AOS process.

Ok, so my husband has been here the last 3 years with a h2b workers visa, (there is a SSN that comes with that), do you think they will let him keep the same one?

Sooo.... just to get things straight, i know you probably already explained this, bu im confusing myself, after alfredo gets his greencard, i have to take him to apply for a SSN? or no?

NOT a new NUMBER...just the card. Does his card now say..NOT AUTHORIZED TO WORK IN US....unless documentation is presented...like H1B, EAD.

I have another stupid question. For some reason, i cannot remember for the life of me what office they send our AOS paperwork to after it is approved, it is at chicago now, and my service center is Vermont, so wont they be sending it there? im just wondering so i can start looking specifically how long they are taking so i know what to expect.

Here is the correct wording:

VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION.

Have you read the AOS guide? Some cases are sent to CSC for faster (which is questionable) processing. But it's not APPROVED until the green card and a welcome letter is sent to you.

Dont quote me on this, cause i dont have it in front of me, but i believe it says "for work authorization only", so after he gets his greencard, i just need to take him to the SS office and have him get a NEW CARD with the SAME NUMBER???? Do they tell you that when they mail you your greencard??

cause i honestly knew nothing about this and im glad im finding out now. Where can i find more information? Maybe on a guide or a uscis website?

Ok so i read over your link (thanks by the way), and it says ........

We issue three types of Social Security cards. All cards show your name and Social Security number.

1. The first type of card shows your name and Social Security number and lets you work without restriction. We issue it to:

U.S. citizens; and

People lawfully admitted to the United States on a permanent basis.

2. The second type of card shows your name and number and notes, “VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION.” We issue this type of card to people lawfully admitted to the United States on a temporary basis who have DHS authorization to work.

3. The third type of card shows your name and number and notes, “NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT.” We issue it to people from other countries:

Who are lawfully admitted to the United States without work authorization from DHS, but with a valid nonwork reason for needing a Social Security number; or

Who need a number because of a federal law requiring a Social Security number to get a benefit or service.

So right now alfredo has whats listed under #2, but when he gets approved for his greencard and we get that in hand, he needs to go to the Social Security Office and get a #1 with the same number just changes it because he is now a perminant resident, right? What will they need when i go, just his passport and his old social security number? if i go do you think they will know what i am talking about?????

Here's a link to the SSA website that provides what is need to get the new card.

I'm 100% sure they will know what you're talking about when you to change the card.

I dont see the link, am i just using the link that you gave me earlier??? Thanks for answering all my stupid question. The reason why i asked if they would know what i was talking about was because the civil surgion didnt know what i was talking about when i went in there talking about getting my husbands immunization records transcribed, and that he didnt need the whole phsyical, they made me bring the actual directions and proof and everything, plus my mother had told me in the past that the ladies at the SS office can be real B***Hs, and give you a hard time, hopefully they wont with me.

Ok thanks, on the link, it asks are you or is the applicant a U.S citizen or lawfully admitted into the U.S? and then gives you three options, U.S born, U.S foreign born, Noncitizen, alfredos a noncitizen right? since he didnt fall into the other catagories? <~~~~i know horribly obvious and stupid questions, but im just not with it today.
