The SSN card is marked that way to tell an employer to ask for other evidence of employment authorization, (EAD or Green-Card)

SSN is NOT work authorization.

Moving this to Work/travel prior to green-card.

Congrats on getting your SS card! I love the SS office; they were the most efficient government institution I've dealt with so far. Got mine in less than two weeks of filing, both for maiden and married name!

The reason it has "Valid for work only with DHS authorization" on it, as far as I'm aware, is because you are an immigrant. They know this because of the information you filled out at the SS office, and as such, they need to make sure people don't think that possession of a SSN is authorization to work, in of itself. Whilst you do need an SSN to work, open a bank account, get a driver's license and a great many other things, you also need an EAD - Employment Authorization Document - in order to work legally. Your SSN doesn't give you that right in of itself.

The fact that it's in your married name doesn't change that. Being married to a USC doesn't give you the right to work; only possession of a Green Card or EAD does that.

Salamat!!

It means when you show that to the employer, you have to show your work permit too, otherwise you could get a job with just that and a drivers license, and they want you to have the work permit, or EAD

I think after you get your green card, you can have that removed

Policy Change

If you apply for SSN or replacement card with an unexpired EAD with one of the categories listed below and SAVE says you are a permanent resident, the application can be processed for an unrestricted card.

RM 00203.410 Evidence of Alien Status for an SSN Card for an Alien Lawfully Admitted for Permanent Residence

https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203410

B. Kinds of evidence establishing LAPR status

4. Alternate evidence of LAPR status

a. Employment Authorization Document (I-766/ I-688B) with SAVE LAPR Verification Response

Generally, when DHS grants/approves an adjustment to LAPR status, the alien receives his/her I-551 card several weeks after the adjustment to LAPR status has been granted. In these cases, while the alien is awaiting the I-551 card, SAVE will verify the alien’s LAPR status, since it is the current immigration status.

Under DHS guidance, we have established alternate evidence of LAPR status for those applicants who have adjusted to LAPR status and are awaiting their I-551 cards. These guidelines apply even if the applicant does not indicate he/she has adjusted to status. Based on discussions with DHS, the alternate evidence of LAPR status will only apply to the 10 most prevalent alien categories that adjust to LAPR status.

Establish evidence of LAPR status if the following requirements are met:

-- The applicant submits an I-766 or I-688B and

-- On the face of the I-766 or I-688B card, the Category or Provision of Law agrees with RM 00203.410B.4.b. and RM 00203.410.B.4.c. in this section, and

-- SAVE verifies LAPR status.

b. Required I-766 Categories

Under the alternate evidence of LAPR status policy described in RM 00203.410B.4. in this section, if an I-766 card is submitted, on the face of the I-766 card the Category shown must be one of the following (status indicated in parenthesis):

-- A6 (FIANCEE – K1/CHILD – K2)

-- A9 (SPOUSE/CHILD OF LAPR)

-- C9 (ADJUSTMENT APPLICANT)
