I apologize for the off-topic post.

The wife (Ecuatoriana) & I (USC) will travel to Ecuador this summer. I want to go into Peru briefly (to say that I've been there) for perhaps a couple of hours -- optimally, finding a small border-town JUST inside Peru where a couple of shops could be visited & souvenirs purchased -- then returning to Ecuador on the same day. The ideal scenario would be to leave Loja (Ecuador) early one day, and to be back in Ecuador (even all the way back in Loja) by night. We might have a private driver.

1. In a web search of not-so-organized postings from travelers who have made one or more crossings, it sounds as though the Huaquillas/Tumbes - Aguas Verdes crossing is to be avoided, due to high traffic and crime. True?

2. Please comment on the other potential crossings: Macara to ?, and Zumba/La Balsa to (?) San Ignacio.

I just spent over 2 months in Huaquillas and visited Peru a few times as well. My ladys parents live in Huaquillas. We stayed at a hotel on the beach one night in Peru. As far as safe. I would never do this without a local. Hit me up on any questions. I can tell you any details if you would like.

You can go to any beach in tumbes, they are awesome and right next to Ecuador. Do NOT go to the jungkly part, as there are remains of the border conflict and they have land mines in both sides of the border!

Gracias, Tarumba; we have pretty much decided to head south from Vilcabamba and cross at La Balsa, perhaps heading as far into Peru as Namballe but not (?) San Patricio. If you or any other VJ-er has been this way specifically, please comment on your experience.

The trip was made in August 2009, straight south: Loja-Vilcabamba-Palamba-Vallalodid-Zumba-La Balsa, into Namballe, Peru. Some of the story is in the "(Humor?)" post elsewhere in this forum. Anyone who wishes to attempt this beautiful route is welcome to consult me privately for details, is NOT to attempt it when it is raining or has recently rained, and IS to carry full cans of mosquito-repellant, si man!

I was unaware that this mountainous route is THROUGH/IN the Amazon jungle. Had no idea that the jungle and mountains could coexist. Live & learn, si man. :)
