I want to get a social security card for my wife as soon as possible so that I can enroll her to my health insurance since she just got pregnant. We have sent the EAD December 12, 2008. According to the SSN application we must provide a document from a U.S. Federal, State, or local government explaining why we need a Social Security Number since she has not been approved yet to work in the U.S. Anybody have any experience with this? What were the steps in getting the document/s?

Thanks.

Double check with your insurance company to make sure they have to have a SSN. They might not really need it (mine didn't).

K-3 will need to wait until they have EAD or Green-card, so you need to file for AOS and EAD first, before you can apply for SSN. (This can take 90 days or more)

CR-1 gets green-card upon entry to the USA and can get SSN within 2 weeks or so of entry.

Moving to work travel prior to green-card forum.

According to Human Resources where I work they need an SSN. I tried twice to enroll her. I got my union involved already.

This is one of the reasons I tell people to avoid the K-3, it may save you a few weeks in processing time, however, the headaches and added cost to adjust status sometimes is not worth it.

Yes I do not want to wait that long. I wanted to see if we could apply for SSN without EAD(authorized to work). According to the SSN application we can apply with out EAD but we will need a written document from fed state or local government to do so. I'm thinking maybe I need to contact a senator? Not sure where to start.

RM 00203.510 Alien without Work Authorization - Nonwork Need for an SSN

https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203510

The only valid nonwork reasons are:

-- a Federal statute or regulation requires that the alien provide his/her SSN to get the particular benefit or service to which he or she has otherwise established entitlement;

-- a State or local law requires the alien who is legally in the U.S. to provide his/her SSN to get public assistance benefits to which the alien has otherwise established entitlement and for which all other requirements have been met.

Putting your wife on your health insurance is not a valid non work reason to be assigned an SSN, since I'm pretty certain that no state or federal law requires the SSN to be provide to get private health insurance.

When am I legally required to provide my Social Security number?

http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/ssa.cf....php?p_faqid=78

Where to start is SSA office can provide an SSA-L676 notice that she's can't be assigned an SSN, otherwise have her show up at SSA office with EAD card or I-551 card or stamp.
