Hello all,

This is me silvershadow212 for some reason I couldn't connect to the site because I forgot my password. So i had to register again.

Anyway, i had my N400 interview last Monday it was at 08:00 am. The IO was nice so I thought I'm going to have a great day. She asked me 6 questions which I answered all correctly, then she went through my application then she made me sign 2 photos and the bottom part of N400 application. She asked for Selective service proof which I handed it to her, then she asked me for my bill of complaint for my divorce. BTW, I applied based on 5 years of continous residency. I didn't know that I needed the bill of complaint I only brought my divorce decree. Then she asked for my ex wife previous divorce decree!!! and her birth certficate!!!! She said she couldn't find them in my file!!! She said maybe the officer who did our 1st interview back in 2000 forgot to make a copy of my ex wife previous divorce decree (she was married before). She gave me the white paper saying I passed the civic gvmt history test, but a decision cannot be made yet!! So now they're asking me to provide them with her birth certificate along with her previous divorce decree. I don't have any contacts with my ex wife I haven't seen her since 2004. Today, they just sent me a letter asking me to provide those 2 documents otherwise they will deny my applaication and I have until august 19th. I'm so frustrated right now as I got very depressed. I mean we provided all those documents when we first applied for my green card!! Why are they asking me for them if it was their fault and lost them. Can anybody help how can I get my ex wife divorce decree from her previous marriage?? also, how can I obtain her birth certificate?? I have no contacts with her anymore, I don't know her whereabouts!! Please help me.

Thanks,

Are you sure you don't have copies of previously submitted documents anywhere.

Here on VJ they always recomend making copies of files you send out.

If you don't have the documents start looking for your wife.

You have to be careful here, this can mess up your citizenship or even more

Tini27, good luck tomorrow!

I'm getting ready for Friday, I will let you know how it went

Thanks,

The only way that you'll be able to get the birth certificate is to contact her and ask her for it, which is unfortunate, however- I believe you should be able to get her previous divorce decrees and your current one through the courthouse(s) where the divorces took place, since they should be public knowledge. You may need to know her last names from the previous marriages for them to be able to find the files. You will want them to certify them as official copies- which usually costs $1-$2 per copy.

Otherwise- I would say hire an attorney to help, they have more resources, and the USCIS takes them a little more seriously than individual filers. They would also know how to explain to the USCIS that these requests are not applicable since you are applying based on 5 years of residency alone, not 3 with a spouse.

I wish you good luck brother- I hope this helps.

Dr.queendlee!! Thanks for the support! Really appreciated:) Congrats Tracy & Tarik on the oath date.

So I passed the interview this morning at Garden city. We arrived 30 minutes ahead of time, we checked in downstairs then were directed to the 2nd floor but the first shock was they did not my husband in, he had to wait in the parking lot!!

The waiting area was packed and small, no way the spouses could fit in so guess it did make sense but still :girlwerewolf2xn: I counted approximtely 80 before 9:30 and was sure that I was going to wait 4 hours at least for the interview, but around 10:45, I was called in by an elder guy who got my name right!! You gotta be careful and listen because the IO's can mispronounce your name or not speak loud enough and they put you at the end of the file if they don't find you right away. There was a loud ceiling fan, really annoying when you're trying to understand whose name they're calling. Cell phones were allowed in the building and while you couldn't really talk in the waiting area, you could just step back in the hallway if needed. That's a good point!!

I followed the IO in his office, there was asked to take an oath to say the truth, sign pictures, then he said let's take the test first so started asking questions. He was very calm, so it helped me get into "calm mode" too.

My 6 questions:

Who's in charge of the executive branch?

If the president can no longer serve, who becomes president?

There are 4 amendments to the Right to vote. Describe one of them.

What's one reason the colonists came to the US?

What's one right of the first amendment?

During the Cold War, what was the main concern of the US?

Read: Who lives in the White House?

Write: The president lives in the White House.

Then he started going through the N400 application, checking biographic info plus the series of questions at the end. He did not ask about my trips back home (I visit my parents every year) or anything else.

He also did not ask for all the stuff I was prepared to give: marriage certificate, naturalization certificate, SS card, my husband's ID copy...but said since I was filing on the basis of marriage to a US citizen, I had to prove marital union and proceeded to request:

-Tax transcripts for 2008 (I had filed before I submitted taxes for this year)

-Utility bills for 2006 and 2007 (I gave him electricity and cell phone bills)

-Joint account statements for 2006 and 2007, I also gave him a letter from the bank stating we had joint accounts and date they were opened, etc..

-Joint health insurance (I have insurance through the university but he has no insurance so i just told him I don't have that)

-Leases for 2006 and 2007 (I also handed him a letter from our landlord)

So, yes a lot of paperwork to submit!!! He was very nice and courteous but I really thought he was just waiting for me to say: No, I don't have those!!

After that, gave me to sign a bunch of paperwork and stamped approved in big red letters on my file. I thanked him, was handed the N652 and was told to wait downstairs for the oath letter. He said wait would be 20 minutes, was more like an 1 hour 20. We went out across the street for lunch and by the time we came back , letter was ready, oath is scheduled for Aug 4 at 8:30 at Brooklyn court in Cadman Plaza. We left at 1:20 pm from there. Total time spent: nearly 4 hours.

As far as the actual premises are concerned, it felt like a huge shopping mall: the good thing was the large parking space, the downside is definitely no spouse entrance. Voila!!!

Hope this detailed report can help any NYC interviewees. Good Luck lj1999 on your upcoming interview.

Thank you very much everybody for your support and advice. VJ really contains a wealth of information. I'll still be around to try and give back to this awesome forum. I'll miss the Marchers ;)

Congrats, Tini27!!!:dance::dance: Thanks so much for sharing all the details! It will be very useful for the rest of us dealing with the Garden City office!

It was interesting that they didn't let your husband in at all, I was planning to go with my husband to his interview next month, but now I am thinking to just have him go alone. I am also wondering if he will be asked for as much paperwork regarding our marriage since we submitted a lot of the things you mentioned with our application already. Regardless, we'll prepare as many documents as we can just in case they ask for it.

Good luck with the oath, please check in and let us know how it goes! :)

Sheryll, thank you for your precious assistance, you're a gem;)

@ Ij 1999, in fact your spouse can go with you and wait in the first floor area but can't go to the 2nd floor where the interview takes place. He just waited outside because the place was packed (It's where infopass appointments are handled) so maybe on your date, it'll be possible to wait inside?

@ Bianca, yeah, I did make up for the wait for the IL by getting a close oath ceremony, at least one advantage of being in NYC B) hope you have a great ceremony as well. Are you taking your little angel?
