Yes, permanent residents can petition to sponsor spouses, but it currently takes a few years to process (currently about 4). Once the LPR is eligible to apply for citizenship they can do that, then upgrade their petition to citizen, and it'll shave a few years off the process.

Thanks for the info Reba....I hope the OP gets back to this thread and can update us on whether she knows about this, or if maybe the info was wrong.

Yup, I knew that GC holders can petition but as Reba said it takes about 5 years (that's what we were told) . Actually my husband is eligible to apply for citizenship this winter so we thought we'd wait until he was a citizen to petition. We were both going to school in our current residing cities until last summer so it kind of made sense to wait. We also heard (from other forums) that we're not supposed to visit each other while that's in process (?) or something to that effect.

We're lucky we're only a few hours drive apart rather than a few states apart or an ocean apart!

I can't believe it took me this long to find this forum!

Thanks for clearing that up chikarakobu, that gives us more information. Hope it doesn't take too long for his citizenship to come through!

Definitely you can visit. There are lots of threads in this forum about this. As long as you have proof of your ties to Canada, and ATeam listed a few items you could bring to show at the border, then you'll be okay.

All the best on your journey! (F)
