Hi Everyone,

I just found this awesome board and have been browsing over posts for the past hour. Lots of great questions and wonderful support here :) I'm still navigating my way around this site (which might take me a while) :P

Quick background: I (Canadian) live in Vancouver, husband (GC holder) lives in Seattle. It's bedtime for me so won't go into anymore detail until I have a more specific question but just wanted to say hi!

Welcome to VJ, friendly bunch here on the Canada forum! Not so much at time in the off topic section in the general forum, lol If ya ever thought the world was going down the drain, its reconfirmed there, lol Welcome

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Welcome to VJ, and specifically to the Canada Forum! Lots of great information, and people here to help you along the way. One glaring thing I found from your post however, is that your husband, in Seattle is a GC holder? Not a US Citizen? I don't think GC holders are allowed to petition. :( Hope you can correct me if I'm wrong, or provide more information.

I'm not certain, but I think a green card holder can sponsor another, BUT it takes a LONG time(only for a cr-1/ir-1 me thinks???)!!!! I'm sure someone else will pipe up!

Yes, permanent residents can petition to sponsor spouses, but it currently takes a few years to process (currently about 4). Once the LPR is eligible to apply for citizenship they can do that, then upgrade their petition to citizen, and it'll shave a few years off the process.

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

Thanks for the info Reba....I hope the OP gets back to this thread and can update us on whether she knows about this, or if maybe the info was wrong.

Yup, I knew that GC holders can petition but as Reba said it takes about 5 years (that's what we were told) . Actually my husband is eligible to apply for citizenship this winter so we thought we'd wait until he was a citizen to petition. We were both going to school in our current residing cities until last summer so it kind of made sense to wait. We also heard (from other forums) that we're not supposed to visit each other while that's in process (?) or something to that effect.

We're lucky we're only a few hours drive apart rather than a few states apart or an ocean apart!

I can't believe it took me this long to find this forum!

Don't believe them! You absolutely can visit. Sometimes the issue is that the Canadian doesn't have proof of non-immigrant intent. The border official may think you're trying to immigrate instead of visit and can deny you entry. It's always a good idea to have proof of your intent to return to Canada like a lease agreement or mortgage, or a letter from your employer detailing when they expect you back! We've all visited while waiting for the process to move. Don't be afraid to do that! Waiting for a year and a half without visiting would drive me crazy! :)

Good luck and WELCOME!
