I really don't understand this whole thing with Americans being against Universal Health Care. I'm an American living in the UK. I think the good points of Universal Health Care far out weigh the bad. Yes the waiting lists for anything are long. But if you are employed you can purchase private health care still. My husband works for Seagate Technologies, an American company. He purchases private health care through his employer. We have AXA. For my husband, my son and daughter and I it costs around 512GBP a YEAR for private health care. I get to see specialist without waiting for months. But for your normal trips to the doctor(GP) it is the NHS who pays for that. It really is great if you can still purchase private health care. And it would be a whole lot cheaper on the companies to pay for part of the insurance. Because these private health care companies wouldn't be sucking the life out of people.

My grandfather had a heart attack in January. His room alone costs $98,000 after medicare and insurance they still owe $38,000. FOR JUST HIS ROOM. They are retired teachers. I mean for fucks sake that's about a whole years salary for one of them.

I had good health insurance when my son was born, cost 78 bucks a month, paid everything, but really didn't need it, doctor charged 150 bucks flat fee for prenatal and delivery, hospital room with food was 35 bucks a night, cheaper than a motel back then, but food was extra. That same son had a baby four months ago. His wife stayed in two days with a $15,000 bill, he has a 20% co pay, so was 3,000 bucks out of his pocket. That same exact hospital room is now 3,000 bucks per day, That is 86 times as much where the minimum wage only has a little more than doubled. That is a crime.

Over the same time interval, my property taxes have gone up by a factor of 12, paying 12 times as much, but with that same son, didn't have to spend hours at night with his homework, they had good teachers and discipline in the schools. With my step daughter, had to spend hours with her, nothing but BS in her classrooms, so what am I paying 12 times as much for? Governor says it's education and Medicaid that are causing the huge deficit, just feel our government is ripping us off.

I htink the republicans are at this point because they simply do not have a viable idea about what to do. If you don't have a workable policy, what can you do? Well, try to shoot holes in the other guy's policy.

The republicans are lost in the desert and they better find their Moses if they hope to retain any semblance of reality.

it worked for the dems from 04-08..........

Considering the following two points (both occured within first-50 days):

  • Gates (with 0bama's approval, obviously) stated last week at Nato summit in Krakow that 0bama was willing to accept "Swat/Malakand-style" (even Pakistan government hasn't been able to spinmeister it into appearing other than abject surrender) truce with Taliban in Afghanistan
  • he had campaigned with anti-NAFTA rhetoric, but shortly after inauguration (about fortnight ago) flew to Ottawa to discuss trade with Harper--and his rhetoric was audibly absent (I read this as "going to Ottawa with almsbowl", which no previous US President including Carter actually did)
So, 0bama is already close to displacing Carter down from #1 to #2 in "list of worst US presidents ever".

I'll give Obama as much respect the progressives here on VJ gave Bush. Deal?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

Pretty much.

Yet I will hold my breath on Democrats using stupid labels on say, Mitt, as the next second coming. But sure there will (before Charles pulls out the oh but there are card) just like there are whiners for every debate.

Now if only the folks would stick to the issues instead of making mush out of nothing. That nevertheless tends to be a common characteristic of crybabies and sore losers.

Hmmmm too bad most people don't read through entire threads to see what I mean.

I can understand the 'whining', the I don't like X or Y policy because... I can't understand the 'wanting to fail'. Either Obama is duly elected, he's an American just like any other politician and his policies are no less American than anyone else's or he's not and someone better go overthrow the government and give it back to some 'true Americans'.

What we are witnessing now are those who are terrified that now their particular brand of ideology is out of favour they need to focus attention on something, preferably something extremely negative in order to stir up the loyalty of those who have let them down by not voting for them this time around. They are hoping that those who voted for Obama will be so scared that they don't do it again. They have to want some level of failure as any level of success is going to show that the things they have talked down and villified are, strangely, not that terrible after all and people might just vote for more of the same.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Strange indeed. All I asked for was why the 'disagreement' that later turned into a neener neener at the apparently intellectual level which more than anything just showed true intellect. But that is a dead horse already.

That seems to be about the size of it.

My link is what was passed by both houses in the final form. All revenue bills must begin in the house and that is why the hr designation. My link is the total work product, including the legislative language, and accompaning analysys.

The link you provided is the enrolled bill, what the president actually signs. Your link is what results after the clerks make all the corrections in language and punctuation, to make the bill easier to read.
