My dad is a green card holder. He went to India last March to take care of some family matters. He was to come back this February. But due to his health, he can not travel at this point of time. Is there any way I can get an extension for about 6 months so that he can get well to travel?

he's needs a travel permit if he will be away long, sorry he's sick, hope he gets better. check out the uscis page for more info

I am assuming that he applied for Advance parole before leaving the US seeing that he was out of the US for nearly a year. I would suggest that you get him to go or contact the local US embassy or consulate as soon as possible, They may be able to extend his advance parole until your father is better. If not he risks being turned way when he returns to the US. They would consider it abandoment of his permanent resident status.

When an individual moves back to their country of origin for over a year while a US Permanent Resident, it's going to be very difficult to argue that they haven't abandoned their status without receiving parole before hand.
