I missed my initial oath ceremony for naturalizing citizenship. I got a notice telling me that I will be notified of my rescheduled oath ceremony. While awaiting the reschedule notice, I was notified that I need to get my fingerprint retaken in order for my N400 to continue processing. This is quite odd since I had already passed my interview.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does this mean I have to get interviewed again or will I be rescheduled as soon as I get my fingerprint done again?

9/8/08 Interviewed and approved.

10/26/08 Requested to be rescheduled due to personal reasons. Request sent to local immigration office located in San Bernardino, CA.

11/21/08 was the initial oath ceremony.

12/01/08 received Notice of Action, saying I failed to appear for my initial oath and would be rescheduled.

2/19/09 received fingerprinting notice from 300 North Los Angeles Street saying I need to be fingerprinted again because my fingerprint has expired.

Any help would be much appreciated.

During my interview I met a guy who was in the same situation as you, he had to go through the whole process again, fingerprints, interview, and then oath, just because he didn't notify the USCIS he wouldn't be able to make it to the Oath!!!, I remember he told me he didn't make it to his first interview because he forgot, I thought it was odd but he seemed a nice person, just very busy. So yeah, you will have a second interview and you will probably have to explain why you didn't notify the USCIS you wouldn't make it to the Oath.

It's unfortunate that you're having to jump through some hoops you've already jumed through, but I'm obviously not the only person here who is thinking "what possible personal reason caused you to reschedule your oath date?"

It clearly wasn't an emergency, unforeseen conflict that couldn't be avoided (e.g. sudden illness).

I'm guessing that it involved you being out of the country, because I doubt there's one other person on this entire board that would miss an oath appointment for anything less than that. Actually, most of us would purposely fly back into the US for the oath ceremony if we happened to be abroad. The oath ceremony is the simplest step of the naturalization process, and represents the absolute last time we have to deal with anything immigration-related whatsoever. It's a huge deal, and it requires virtually no effort. It's a major life change, but all you needed to do was show up. It's so important that there's literally nothing that should take precedence, other than the imminent demise of a close family member.

Not trying to bust on you, but dude, what were you thinking? That was one bad decision!

Application for Naturalization

11/14/08 - sent off N-400 to Vermont Service Center

11/18/08 - NOA stating app sent to National Benefits Center

11/24/08 - NOA giving fingerprinting appointment

Refrigerator door is finally clean with 24 point print in red to remind us of dates, I-751 was on there for 21 months! Left as early as three hours when traffic or weather looked unfavorable. Step daughter got a little hard headed for biometrics for missing school, just said, if you don't go, you won't be going to school, period.

Six years in our military burned that into me, no excuse whatsoever for being late or missing an assignment, and the penalties, like the USCIS were severe. I didn't like it, but that is the way it is. Such a thing as a mutually agreed appointment is unheard of with them.

Daughter is due for citizenship in 15 months, did start a folder on her for tax returns and trips, but that is up to her, she is wishy washy on this, but just pointed out, she may have troubles renewing her foreign passport. We skipped vacations waiting for that damn letter to come in, and the online status is worthless, but once it's over, it's over.

A friend of mine (husband of my wife's best friend), just forgot. He forgot to go.

He's 26 years old, has been here since he was a little kid, doesn't understand the importance of it, because probably he's already more american than many citizens, as matter of facts he speaks english much better than russian. His only inconvenience is that his ukranian passport didn't allow him to travel to many places without a visa. Anyways, he just got another letter the week after and he's a citizen now.

I would reschedule it to go on a vacation!! I reschedule d my biometrics because i was planning on taking holidays! not everyone gets super excited about becoming a USA citizen!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Ditto.

I am (reasonably) excited about becoming a US citizen, but I'd trade a 6-month delay (even more) for my football team winning the European Champions League this year :)

I would NOT cancel a vacation with my wife for an oath that I can take a few weeks later, hopefully it won't happen, but still....

Also, you might have to travel for work as I often do. I would not cancel or postpone travel and possibly jeopardize my career and job for an immigration appointment.

Points taken. Perhaps I'm kinda really excited because it will mean I'll finally be able to apply for a particular job I've been wanting to do for a long time (police officer - gotta be a citizen where I live). For other people, I guess that becoming a citizen isn't that big of a deal because it really won't change their daily lives too much.

I'm still not inclined to reschedule any immigration appointments. Lord knows when the appointment will be rescheduled for - could be a few weeks, could be 6 months, or could be at an even more inconvenient time than the current one.

Obviously different people have different priorities and rightfully so.

If it involves your dream job, then it's your top priority as it should be.

But it is NOT the end of the world to forget about the oath, it happens. It'd be much worse to forget your kid in the car during a heat wave while you go shopping (and unfortunately that happens too!).

The reason I couldn't make it to the Oath was because I had to be out of the country attending my brother's wedding. And based on my research beforehand, on USCIS's own website, it said that if you cannot make it to the Oath, then you should send in a written explanation as to why you cannot make it, and request to be rescheduled. I did all that and like what I posted above, I did get a Notice of Action saying I would be rescheduled. And I believe federal law allows one unexcused absence from the oath but if you miss 2, then you have to reopen your case.

That's why I'm puzzled as to the latest development. I do know that fingerprint expires in 15 months so mine has expired. I'm hoping that as soon as I update my fingerprint, I'll be rescheduled.

But anyone with personal, first hand experience, please let me know what happened to you.

Thanks.

It didn't happen to me and hopefully it won't, but obviously your brother's wedding is much more important than an immigration appointment.

A friend of mine though, as I said above, just forgot to go to his oath here in New York City at the end of January (I remember him telling me at a superbowl party on Feb 1). He got another oath letter scheduled for Feb 11 and became a citizen that day with no problems.

In your case, you've been unlucky that your fingerprints expired in the meanwhile (when did you take last time, do you remember?). That will delay your case a little more, but no big deal. As soon as your background check is done again, they will schedule another oath date for you.

I was fingerprinted on 10/04/2007. Interviewed on 09/08/2008. I guess since fingerprint expires in 15 months and January would be 15 months.... I guess it's just odd to me that they have to do a background check again since I was already approved....

Thanks.

I rescheduled my interview. The initial appointment was for Sept, I wrote and requested it be rescheduled after Dec. (I was overseas with work commitments). Obviously it caused a delay, but, no problems.
