Hi guys, just wondering about ssn. Does the ss office assign you a number right away when you apply for it then the card after 2-3 weeks, or are they gonna give you both your number and card 2-3 weeks after application?

Once everything has been verified and the application has been certified to assign the SSN and issue the card you can go back to the SSA office to find out your number the next day. Since, the card is mailed you need to allow a couple weeks to receive it, but normally the Post Office only takes 4 or 5 days to get it to you.

Now the problem is with the verification of your immigration status. If it can be done through the SAVE system while you are at the office everything is fine the time frames I listed above apply. If they can't verify your status through SAVE and need to send a Form G-845 to the local immigration office for verification of your status it could be weeks or even months before that's completed.

Maria,

how did you know that they were able to verify it after 5 days? I went to SSA on June 9th but my info is not in SAVE yet. They gave me a letter saying they will send me a card once they are able to verify my status. i've been going back to that office every couple of days , letter in hand, to follow up. I'm hoping to get the number at least, if receiving the card in the mail will take a few days..

Should i try another SSA office? Infopass?

It sucks that after receiving EAD unexpectedly early, it looks like it will take forever to get my SSN! And my interview is coming up really soon! I need to open bank accounts, apply for health insurance, and of course, find a job! :(:(:(

Once you have submitted an SSN application with an office you are stuck with that office until the application is certified or denied. Plus it's only been 8 work days since you applied. Going back once a week is enough.
