How recent must my documents be?

In Sept 2007 my case was approved for processing and I received instructions to send in medical exam, police certificate etc. However, my fiance and I had an issue with our co-sponsor, delaying the process until now, March 2009. My question is can I still use my medical exam and police certificate etc from Oct 07 or will I need documents which are more recent? Does anyone know how recent these documents must be? Thank you so much.

You will need new. Medical exams and police certificates are valid for one year for most consulates, 6 months for others. You will also need new I-134s, g-325, fiancee letters of intent, basically anything that was dated

Okay but I can continue where I left off, correct? No need to reassemble and send in the I-129f package?

The approved I-129f petition has a validity period of 4 months (the time in which you must be interviewed). Did you request an extension(s) from the Embassy or do you have reason to believe they automatically extended it for you? Two years seems like an awful long time to have it extended.

No, I didn't even think of requesting an extension... I assumed at the time my case would stay open until I requested an interview. I thought I could explain the year of case inactivity at the interview by bringing in proof of a continuing relationship and intent to marry for that time period. I just e-mailed the consulate general about it. Do you know how quickly they generally respond to e-mails?

Yeah, it doesn't tend to work like that. :(

Check out the Canadadian Regional forum here on VJ and ask those fine folks there for the best contact information.

I'm going to assume that they will claim you have abandoned your case and sent it back to the US a long time ago. You will probably have to start all over with the process explaining the reasons why you abandon your first.

Best of luck to you.

Good news! After contacting the consulate, they said cases are usually closed after 1 year inactivity. However, for some reason, my case still remained open. So after updating my biographical data and submitting new letters of intent, they have given be the go ahead to proceed with medical exam etc. I don't have to start all over after all!

Go and buy a lottery ticket, because that is extremely lucky.

Yet another example of how different one consulate is to another. I've always heard 4 months. I'm still going to go by that though just in case. ;)
