I just received my GC. I have several questitons about it.

1. Now the EAD is useless, I can use my GC instead of it for employment?

2. I can travel outside the US with this GC, and return and enter the US without a problem, right?

3. US citizens don't need to apply for a visa to travel to some countries, i.e. Canada. If I hold the GC, can I travel the same as a US citizen or do I still need to apply for a visa?

4. If I travel to Europe, I will need to apply for a visa. Should I apply using my GC? my chinese passport? either one? which one is preferable?

5. If you travel to Europe now, which is a union, how do you apply for a visa? The consulate of the country where you will enter?

I just received my GC. I have several questitons about it.

1. Now the EAD is useless, I can use my GC instead of it for employment? Correct

2. I can travel outside the US with this GC, and return and enter the US without a problem, right? Correct - PR/Green Card proves you have a legal right to enter/re-enter

3. US citizens don't need to apply for a visa to travel to some countries, i.e. Canada. If I hold the GC, can I travel the same as a US citizen or do I still need to apply for a visa? No - you are still a citizen of your home country and as such have essentially the same travel requirements/restrictions you had before becoming a LPR

4. If I travel to Europe, I will need to apply for a visa. Should I apply using my GC? my chinese passport? either one? which one is preferable? PR/Green Card is not a travel document - you will use your Passport.

5. If you travel to Europe now, which is a union, how do you apply for a visa? The consulate of the country where you will enter? Yes

yes you can now use your green card for employment and you can use it to travel outside the US.

you are not a US citizen so you would still need to apply for a visa to specific countries, but countries like canada for example don't require permanent residents to acquire visas. it varies from one country to the next. i have noticed however that the conditions to receive visas are much simpler if you are a permanent resident (eg europe) for the last question you would probably have to do some research on that one.

1) Green-card is employment auth, the EAD is no longer needed.

2) Green-card allows re-entry from trips abroad.

3) Depends on country, green-card holders can go to Canada, Mexico, and the islands in the Caribbean without a visa. HOWEVER if traveling to other countries outside NORTH America like EUROPE, Japan Etc.. the green-card holder will need a visa if they needed on before.

4) You apply for visas as a Chinese Citizen, using your passport. You will indicate that your residency is USA and that you have an I-551 card, this shows that you intend to return to the USA.

5) There is a visa called Shengren visa you apply for it at the EU country's consulate that you intend to visit first, UK, and Ireland do not issue this visa, and you will need a separate visa to visit those countries.

1. Yes

2. You betcha

3. Sorry to disagree with the pre-eminent Karen and Otto on this one. You can travel freely to Canada, Mexico and Carribean Islands with only the green card. We live 6 miles from the Canadian border and 1 hour ride from Montreal. My green card holding wife travels there a couple times a week to stimulate the Canadian economy (most recently yesterday until all the downtown shops finally kicked her butt out so they could go home to bed) and never has a problem. She doesn't even show her passport, only her green card. For other countries, yes you will require a visa if you did before BUT from what I understand (and I hope they are correct) it is now easy to get a visa for most countries. For example EU countries routinely refused tourist visas to Ukrainians. I am told now they will issue wone on request, basically, for a fee of course. I hope so, we are planning a trip to Ukraine and Italy this year.

4. When applying for a visa you wil use both, the passport to show citizenship and GC to show residency.

5. Yes, apply to the counsulate in the USA of the country you will enter.
