Question About Co-Sponsor

OK...now for my second question. My job of 32 years went away this past October. I am not rich. I receive Unemployment Compensation, have good home equity, some money in the bank, a 401K and a portion of my ex's state pension coming available in a few years. In addition, I am in the process of applying for Social Security Disability, which could take 6 months or more. As I begin the K1 & K2 Visa process, I am wondering if, too be on the safe side, I may ask my daughter to be a co-sponsor. In the event that we did that; what is the probability that the government would actually make a co-sponsor pay up if there were financial problems? My experience watching social programs like food stamps...is that the overseers gladly service all potential eligbles in order to make the program budgets get more funding.

Your daughter can be a co-sponsor if she has enough money. My fiance at that time was poor and his mother was the co-sponsor (I didn't need to worry about the poverty guideline thing because she makes enough profit).

Sorry I don't have information about how much money one does need to meet the co-sponsoring requirements.

Getting a co-sponsor is always a good idea especially if the main sponsor is in a tight spot. Hope I helped you!

K1-Visa in Montreal, Canada.

4/07 - Filed the I-129 F [Petition for Alien Fiancé(e)] Along with Bio forms [G-325a for both of us]

At this point, today, I recommend a co-sponsor. Just to be on the safe side. If your SSDI comes through before the interview and you have the "award letter" it will be counted as income. A 401k will likely NOT be counted unless you are over age 59. They are not usually considered assets which can be liquidated unless you greatly discount their value for penalties.

Liklihood of anyone coming after your daughter are small simply because it is unlikely your spouse would collect welfare. I mean you know what your capacity is, the co-sponsor knows what your capacity is. Are you worried?
