That is just wrong, wrong, wrong. Did I mention that it's wrong?

 I would find a way to diplomatically approach the boss and express your "concerns". good luck!

I'm not sure if that would be a good idea. The boss obviously feels his son can do no wrong. Any criticism of the son could spell bad news. This is definitely a delicate situation. I wonder if there are any laws that cover this?

It's definitely a delicate situation, but it's WRONG, WRONG, WRONG and should be dealt w/ in *some* manner. Now is certainly not a good time to be looking for new jobs, so yes, tact is of the utmost importance in this approach. Perhaps there is someone else that can offer some "back-up" or act as a "go-between"?

This is a very delicate issue and I'm not sure if there is an appropriate way of handling it. This is his SON and blood is thicker than water! It doesn't matter that I'm a very hard worker. His son has never been able to hold down a job and my boss is trying to make him excel at something and it's unfortunate that i am the one paying the price for it :( The list just goes on and on with what his son is NOT doing, he was even caught sleeping at his desk and my boss just chuckled about it. Well tomorrow will be a new day and I will try to keep my composure but the problem is... how long can i keep my cool.

My husband is in a similar situation at his job. They keep hiring family members who don't know and do squat but for more pay than what they give my husband. He recently had a sit down come-to-Jesus meeting with his boss and told him he would like a pay increase or he will be quitting. I didn't think that was the wisest move, but my husband expressed how sick he is of this unjustice. He is flat out angry and said he can't take it anymore.

I have no advise for you, Maureen. But I agree, just see what this coming week holds in store and pray hard things will work out in the best way for you.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Well, the goal here I think would be not to have to work with the son. So perhaps you could tell your boss that you've discovered you really don't need an assistant after all and that you are sure there are a lot of other things that the son could be doing with his many talents rather than "wasting" his time helping you. Something along those lines where it doesn't criticize the son in any way, but gets the idea across that he doesn't need to be working with you.

I would have phrased it, "I feel it is inapropriate to have "my assistant" writing my paycheck. It is acceptable my supervisor writes my paycheck."

Wow, your boss is really something! Just like my old boss.

That's a great idea!!!!

Yeah, but what if the boss comes back with "OK then he is now your supervisor!". :-O

Wow, I'm not alone! Welcome to my world. My boss hired his daughter's boyfriend to do my old job when he promoted me, and I had to train a 23 year old with ADHD how to do detailed accounting work. I'm not saying I have anything against 23 year old guys, or people with ADHD, I'm just saying this job is definitely a major challenge for him. He's been in the position for almost two years now and guess what - I'm still training him! I had to write a 54 page detailed manual for him of how to do his job, which he never bothers to look at. My favorite phrase to him is "READ, XXXX, READ!

I can't tell you how to survive, but from the sounds of it he probably won't last long there. He sounds like the type that will quit out of sheer boredom. Maybe you'll get lucky and that will happen sooner than later.

In my case, I was fortunate to get moved to another building so I at least don't have to sit near him any more and can screen his calls and wait until he's had time to figure things out on his own before calling him back, if he even bothers to try.

The hardest thing for me in all of it was that everyone lied to me and pretended like he wasn't the boss's family, and once when I did question someone about it, he told the boss and the boss threatened to fire me for daring to suggest he would do something like that. We work for a huge corporation and nepotism is against corporate policy. Technically it isn't nepotism yet since his daughter hasn't gotten married (at least not that I know - they're very secretive around me) but someone who doesn't play the little "kiss my boss's butt" game told me that this guy is a friend of the boss's family and has been for several years, even went on a business trip with the boss's family to Hawaii years ago. Before I got moved to another building the kid was talking about his "new girlfriend" like he had just met her and started dating her. Of course he never mentioned to me who she was. The lies got so thick he couldn't even keep them straight. First he told me he had never met the boss before his interview. Then he told me he had known his girlfriend for years, but only as friends, never dating. Even after two years, there are people in my very small department (about 8 people) who don't think I know about the relationship. I think that is the hardest thing for me, that any of my co-workers could possibly think I'm that stupid.

I feel your pain though, and if you ever want to talk, just PM me.
