I didn't take the train (flew) but at the train station one can catch a shuttle that will drop you off at many of the downtown hotels!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

The train is a good choice, it's such a pretty ride. And I love VIA it's just more relaxing and you don't have to worry about security/checking bags etc. It doesn't drop you off really close, I mean I don't think you could walk or anything. But the Concierge in whatever hotel you're staying in will speak English, so you can ask for directions. Most cab drivers and people in that area of Montreal speak English, lots of tourists.

If you goto google maps you will see that the consulate is not far from the via train station .. about a 3 minute drive in a car ... i am taking the train for my intrview and if the weather is good i will just walk it because i've never been to montreal before and thats a good way to see a bit of it ... but yes the train station is close.

in fact i see my intrview is about month ahead of yours if i remember to do so i will come on here and tell you excactly how far it is

We are taking the train! It was not that expensive and it will be a nice ride. It's about a 10-15 minute walk to the Consulate.

Just so you know the 5 p.m. train from Montreal to Toronto is an express with NO stops! (Same with Toronto-Montreal, 5 p.m.)

I've heard that people have received the passport the next day, but I think it varies and you can't really count on it.

I'm in no rush to get my passport, so I'm not going to bother. I'm just going to have them mail it back to me like usual.

It only cost $144.90 to book a return trip from Toronto Union Station to Montreal Central Station. It's a reasonable amount and the express train is roughly the same speed as driving (and you just sit back and relax).

I also booked a hotel that is on the same block as the consulate -- Le Square Phillips. http://www.squarephillips.com/montreal-hotel

I've stayed there before and it is really nice. It is a bit pricey at $145 a night but you can walk to the consulate in a minute.

20-Jul-2011: Biometrics appointment

03-Dec-2011: File Electronic AR-11 to update address

25-Mar-2012: Approved

There's a hotel directly across the street from the consulate on Rue Rene Levesque, lots of VJers have stayed there when in Montreal for their interviews. Can't for the life of me remember what it's called, but check out the Hotels review thread in this forum, I"m sure you'll find it there.

The train station is a 15 minute walk (tops!) from the consulate, no need for a taxi or shuttle at all. There's a Sheraton Hotel directly across the street from the station, it's quite nice, but also quite pricey. I used to stay there when I would go to Montreal for business, as our office was right there on the same side of the street as the train station.

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

fwiw i drove in to montreal from the nyc area and had no trouble with the road signs... it's all very intuitive.
