Humm, I just pulled out my old packet 3 and It doesn't really say. It says they cannot process your case until you send them the DS 230 Part I and the checklist, but It doesn't say they cannot process your case without the DS 160. I would send the packet in now, and just be aware that even though you submitted your packet 3, you may be delayed until they receive the DS 160 for your son. It doesn't hurt to try right?

For the police certificate - I'm assuming name based will do if you live in Canada and do you ask for the criminal record check or the police record check?

And how do you find out when the Consulate received your package from NVC?

Mine said it was a criminal record check, and yes, name based is all you need if you're in Canada. I assume criminal record check and police record check is the same thing no? I walked into the police station and said something like, "Hi! ummm... I need one of those police check things..." They'll know what you mean!

I waited 2 weeks or so and e-mailed Montreal and asked if they had my case yet... They replied by saying the packet 3 was sent a couple days before. They're pretty good with responding to e-mails as long as you put your case # in the subject line

In the letter my wife received, it asked for repository police check. I got it in 5 minutes. it was name based
