For me Skype works like a charm. My husband uses freecall to call me (on my cell) and I have unlimited incoming calling minutes. The second year I remember the horror of calling cards- what a rip off! the first year it was letter lol.

Hey, I had the same problem before.....stacks of used calling cards that were too expensive to use in the first place, poor call quality......AND, in the end, I had no real proof to use for my petition! Now I use an online card from www.uniontelecard.com It's cheap, wonderful customer service and best of all, you can print your call logs by date! Shows time, date, length of call etc.

if your wife has dsl/high speed internet try Magicjack.com it cost only 20.00 a year and she can call or you can call with no additional cost.

MagicJack :dance::dance::dance:

I'm curious about that. I thought about getting that too, but did I read that magicjack only works for calls to and from the US only? Does it work for international calling?

My husband and I are using Windows Live Video Call everyday, from the time we get home from work until we wake up in the morning we leave the call running unless we're at work. We hardly type at all, only when we leave offline msgs. The only problem is that msn doesn't have any video call logs, only a message history. When my husband calls me on my phone when i'm not home, he uses phone cards...so we don't have much evidence to show our day to day communication.

I don't know if this thread is country specific or not. But I'm in the USA and my fiance is in Hong Kong. (We are planning to get marry soon and file for CR1/K3 afterward.) I have the "unlimited world subscription" from skype, it's $9.95+tax per month, and it comes with a SkypeOut number which I can call/use from any landline or cell phone. With that SkypeOut number, I can make unlimited international call to Hong Kong with just one flat rate of $9.95 per month...it doesn't work for all countries though...

I got my wife a voice over IP phone. Its like $20 a month and unlimited calling. I did the ph card before but tats really expensive.

Another option would be to have your spouse subscribe to vonage and send the modem to you, i'm using that right now, im in the philippines but i have a california landline that's VOIP based, my hubby, my friends can call me anytime of the day and vise versa, i can even call UK and Canada for a flat rate of $25. I have a magicjack too but the lines are always choppy. Vonage works for me.

My wife had dsl in the Phils so I sent her a packet8 phone so she had a local US number in the Phils so we could talk anytime and she could also talk to her family that was already here! Now that she is here she is able to call and talk to her family when ever she wants and doesnt cost a thing besides our monthly rate.

just have them pay for internet, up to $50 a month. Then, purchase a vonage plan in the USA, with a local number, mail them the box, have them set it up and you only pay $30 a month for vonage!! Can't beat that price?

I just bought the magicjack. It doesn't go to Costa Rica but I can use my phone cards and not use my cell minutes when I call before 9pm. The sound quality is good. I would do vonage except my husband can't get broadband internet where he is from in Costa Rica. He can get a dial up service but it is a super slow connection. Does anyone know the best way to call Costa Rica or for them to calll the US? I checked into so many things. The phone cards end up being the cheapest.
