Once parent's visa is approved...

Can someone who has been through the process of bringing their parent's over explain to us once they immigrate to the US:

1. When can they apply for adjustment of status (green card) or is it automatic because they would have the immigrant visa approval?

2. They will both be 65 when they arrive in the US...are they eligible to apply for a SS card? Do they need one? I would think so since getting health insurance will be another obstacle and I assume they will need a SS# to get the health insurance for new immigrants.

1) no AOS but an automatic greencard

2) As a greencard holder of course eligible to apply for a SSN. One needs a SSN for amongst many things... bank accounts, taxes, etc....

Once the parents arrive in the US, their green cards will be mailed to the address they wrote on the DS-230. It only takes a few weeks.

You may want to start looking into Health insurance for your parents. It is very expensive for people over 65 who dont qualify for medicare. Shop around and make sure you read the policy carefully as there are lots of exclusions for people who have not lived in the US for at least 6 months.

Last time I looked into this area it was going to cost $435.00 per month for each parent.

Agreed. I did do some preliminary research and found the same numbers you did, and of course they will exclude all pre-existing conditions which of course people age 65 are going to have.

You have to buy the policies sold only on the Internet (scary) and then attempt to decipher the fine print and exclusions (even scarier).

Fortunately my background is in insurance so I am not going in cold but it sure would be nice if BlueCross or Humana could offer a product for older immigrants in this situation.
