agreed that the 30 AK round is ballistically ideal for deer up to 200 meters. several makers provide soft point ammo in 125-150 grs weight, and CZ makes a traditional styed sporter rifle chambered for it in a short length mauser action.

i know people who have converted AK types into spring assisted straight pull rifles specifically for deer hunting in states that prohibit semi-auto (penna is one). this is done by defeating the gas system, either by removing the gas block and tapping the gas port in the barrel for a set screw plug and putting everythign back together, or by removing the gas piston from the carrier and replacing it with a guide rod and installing a bushing in the rear sight base for the guide to run in. in either case, what you have when you are done is a magazine fed straight pull rifle with a spring assisted bolt closure.

charles, the A1 select fire option is a mag dumper. the modern service rifle no longer has this feature, rather, a 3 round burst mechanism.

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

thought the quickest method of dumping a mag was to hit the little button on the right side of the lower receiver :P

It's moves like this (with Obama) which lead me to believe he needs to get that brilliant Campaign manager back in charge of things.

This Suggestion of banning guns will rake more moderates over to the Right-wing side, stream tons of cash into the GOP and eat away at folks who were believing he was actually "reasonable".

Clinton banned these guns, which lead to alternative models being sold, which operated the same exact way as the old ones... except smaller magazines. (and cosmetics like bayonet mount).

Bush let the ban expire and the result in crime has been so undetectable that now Obama, has to go out side of the country to find a reason to reactivate the ban.

It would seem like Obama would have enough uphill battle ahead of him on important issues, why

loose political capital on this non-issue? (not to mention fire up the Right)

Where is the political logic to this?

the potential "AWB2" that has been floated twice in the last 2 years but never gotten to the floor is written much more carefully than the last one. it would not allow sidestepping, and would regulate anything with mag cap over 10, rifle or handgun. in some versions anything semi-auto is prohibited.

Modern societies tend to not be vigilante cultures. Therein should lie part of the answer.

Anyway I'm off.

yet letting a bunch of hoodlums run the country isn't what i'd call a modern society. to me, it sounds like the dark ages.

Well quite a few of those hoodlums in 3 piece suits ran that country with our approval since they gave our industrial representatives quite the leeway to do business in their neck of the woods. Things still look the same too.

Modern societies tend to not be vigilante cultures. Therein should lie part of the answer.

Anyway I'm off.

how interesting to note that there are 300 million privately held guns in the US today (1 for each person), and that in the "wild west" days, the number was estimated to be about 1 for 8 persons. perhaps it's just market economics and the relative price of a gun compared to the average annual salary decreasing due to modern manufacturing methods. or perhaps, modern society has somehow found a way to have increased gun ownership with decreased vigilantism. can't remember the last time i was at a lynching, or dragged a low down no good cattle rustler from the sherrif's jail and strung him up.

postulate.

Postulate what?

The fact that 300 million weapons does not match to each resident in the nation. You have nutjobs like yourself that own quite a few.
