Bill's got to be old enough to know the racial implications of watermelons associated with blacks.

For anyone who is too young or is unaware...here's some history.

from what i recall in the book "roots" (read about 2 decades ago, so if my memory is incorrect, sue me) watermelon allegedly resembled in taste a fruit from africa, hence why the newly arrived slaves liked it so much.

Oh well, that's ok then, watermelons made African slaves feel "right at home". I suppose this is an example of the 'rationalization' of why it's perfectly ok to find this image humerous. Jeezus, this is ignorance at its worst.

i didn't insinuate nor say anywhere in this thread that it is ok to find this thread humorous. you trying to win the duh award for the day?

I have no problem anyone finding this thread humerous - although the humour is somewhat hollow in parts. So, are you saying you are just throwing us a tid bid of information as to why, presumably there is some association with slaves and watermelons per se?

it was an add on to what steven said, nothing more, nothing less. the only funny thing i see in this thread so far is you trying to take offense to something that wasn't even intended to be offensive.

So the only 'funny' thing in this thread is my questioning your desire in this particular thread to suggest there is a nice benign explanation for why slaves 'liked' watermelons?

Why would it be funny? Please I am dying to understand the humour.

Personally, I have never considered a president turning the White House lawn into a produce farm hilarious but let it be noted that is simply because there is nothing funny about it, not because the notion of a president turning the White House lawn into a produce farm is racist because of some nefarious association with produce picking and slaves.

Maybe he was suggesting Obama should setup a Micro-farm, with the picture only showing watermelons. Watermelons being one of many vegetables and fruits.

Which would be funny because????

BY, I still can't decide if you are a bigot/racist, or you simply can't understand what racism is. It's a toughie.

The thought of the white house lawn turned into a farm is funny.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Just call me both.

I'll be first to say cannot stand the attitude of certain low socioeconomic ethnicity / cultures (well two in particular) in America.

One typically drives this:

Something else? As in, the OP photo is not offensive? Seriously Charles, I don't for one moment believe that you are a racist, but you do cling to the 'we can't do anything these days because of the PC brigade'. That is just bullcrap. There are some things no one should WANT to do, and offending people on the basis that they are black should be pretty high up on the list of things one doesn't want to do.

I'm not sure I phrased that last bit right, but I am sure you know exactly what I am saying.

i'm so sure my post that threw you into a tizzy would be so offensive to anyone else, given it was in a book about a black slave, plus written by a black man. i'm just the white guy happened to cite the book and the information in it as perhaps where the racial overtones of how watermelons became an ethnic joke.

outrage, party of one, your table is ready.

Oh stop with the hysterics already, tizzy my #######. I don't really know what you think you were trying to do. However, one thing you have not done is condemn that offensive piece of tat that is the OP photo. Do you find it offensive, just you know, for clarity?

The only part I don't "get" is.... Why is it that those who are the MOST offended are always white liberals?

My God they fall all over themselves to find some scrap of evidence, to prove racism is still alive and well, .. I suppose this evidence insures they still have a purpose.

Way to go Danno, another pointless post from yet another 'oh, we can't allow the PC brigade to ruin our fun' crowd.

But the image does have obvious racist connotations Danno...
