You don't get your passport at the oath ceremony. After you get your citizenship and complete the oath ceremony they give you a naturalization certificate. You then have to go to get the paperwork and fill it out and send it in to the passport place to get your passport. Its not part of becoming a citizen. Lots of americans have never had a passport. Here is the website that will tell you everything you need to know about getting a passport.

Even though US post office postmaster come out for accepting US Passport application, you don't want to do that.

At least, you want to make the copy of the certificate of naturalization before sending US passport application form with "original" certificate of naturalization.

US post office will use priority mail, but it may be lost in the mail.

At least, you want to have backup copy just in case.

You can have personal backup copy without a problem.

Fees: http://www.travel.state.gov/passport/get/fees/fees_837.html

I did mine at the postoffice. Think I had to buya money order--As i forgot my check book, so that was an extra $1.25 or something like that!! Was extremely quick, juts over a week to get passport, and two days later, the naturalization letter arrived, YES they come in separate packages (in case 1 gets lost)

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

This is a VERY GOOD POINT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had planned to apply for my passport at the ceremony but the passport office was not there that day. I already had my two photos with me. But I'm glad I didn't apply because of what moon said: MAKE A COPY OF YOUR CERTIFICATE!!!!!!!! That's the FIRST thing I did when I went back home. Then I went to the post office and applied.

Yeah, the USCIS wants a copy of it in case you lose yours plus you have to supply new photos to them. Would take about two minutes for someone to type it out and glue on your photo for only 400 hundred bucks. Last time I checked, takes about a year to process it. Had the option of showing SS either her passport or certificate for proof of citizenship, they took the certificate as it was easier to copy. Just said, be darn careful with it, it will cost you 400 bucks for you to replace it, they were careful.

Would be nice if the USCIS would notify the DOS that you are a USC and even the SS, but I gather these agencies don't like to talk to each other.
