Manila Embassy Interview

I posted the following in the AOS forum, but I thought it would be of interest here too.

We learned something at our AOS interview this week.

Some countries have rules regarding name changes following marriages and the USCIS complies with these rules regarding the name on the GC.

In the Philippines, your mother's maiden name is used for your middle name and the father's family name is your last name.

When a woman marries, the father's family name becomes her middle name and her husband's family name becomes her family name...dropping the mother's maiden name entirely.

When we applied for AOS we filed using Marlene <mother's maiden name> <my last name>

We had done the same for the SSN

The appication had to be modified at the AOS to reflect the Philippine naming requirement. So it's now Marlene <father's family name> <my last name>. There was no choice. When we get her passport updated they will follow those rules and the green card will match it now.

Thanks for this info. I've been wondering about this and have in fact seen diferent opinions. Since one of the first official documents we will be getting is the Marriage Certificate, I want to make sure we get it right the first time. Your explanation was very clear.

BTW Congrats on the AOS approval. That must feel good.

Hi John_and_Marlene..

I know hows it feels like ... I once battled this with my USC husband, i explained to him completely how it goes in Manila when u got married. The way he tried to filing-up the I-485, he put my mother's name to be my new middle name. But i retype my AOS & ED forms and even in our all commingling of assets, i always used my name as first-father's name-husband name. :D

He even once try to talked me about if i want to change my son name's before the adoption. Because he well says that in US you could change your name if you want and do it in legal way.

told my husband, sometimes "culture" stays still eventhough your in different land already.

regards!

We'll fix the name the way she wants it at naturalization and her new U.S. passport will reflect it.

I will be going back to the Philippines when my fiancee has her interview. I plan on attending the interview with her. Does anyone have any experience with this? Anything you could share with me would be greatly appreciated. I have found lots of embassy interview experiences here and on asawa, but none seem to have any experiences where the filipina had her fiance with her.

Thanks for the congratulations ... we are very happy about the AOS approval.

Yes, she did send an authorization letter. She was able to process it without any problem.

The person that did it for us was a relative of a friend. She didn't know Marlene personally and asked for more compensation than we thought reasonable, but we paid it. With the DHL fees both ways, Western Union fees, and her expenses and compensation, we spent about $300.

wow, that is a big amount! how quickly did Marlene get the certificate? from the time she sent the dox to Duabi and that person finished processing it.

It will be good if anyone from here and who's already done with their interview can post their experiences here. It will be greatly appreciated.

I'm thinking that they really going to inquire about the relationship like how did it start? why? where? when? and how?

I will be going back to the Philippines when my fiancee has her interview. I plan on attending the interview with her. Does anyone have any experience with this? Anything you could share with me would be greatly appreciated. I have found lots of embassy interview experiences here and on asawa, but none seem to have any experiences where the filipina had her fiance with her.

Hi Dean;

As lira says, you as the USC peitioner present on the interview date of your fiance will be a "BIG" advantage to make it approved. As my husband did, he was more been asked throughly to prove all matters about affidavit of support, also weve been asked all about relationships and trips weve been together.

gudluck! & welcome visiting phils again.

congrats on your AOS approval!!!

i was wondering if i can just follow the western way regarding the middle name?

see i have 2 first names and the way i filled out my application for the ssn, i listed my 2nd name as my middle name then took my husband's last name, dropping my father's last name altogether

will this cause a problem?

thanks for any input!!!

Hi peeps,

I'm just wondering what would be the causes that they will delay the issuance of the visa or review more your case?

Thanks in advance.

Filed: K-3 Visa Country: Philippines
Timeline

this is really confusing to my poor little brain, so maybe someone that's already been here can clear this up for me.

We got the DS-230 packet today (yay!) for our CR1 petition from the NVC. It had the instructions that we expected, but also had a supplement. Now this is weird. Note that if you read the instructions, they say that you have to submit a whole bunch of docs, *including* your nbi. These documents are forwarded to the embassy by the NVC. Ok, now the supplement says it's from the Embassy. It's called "Supplement to instructions for immigrant visa applicants (OF-169) in the philippines". The next line says "Please have all documents at the time of your interview to avoid processing delays." This list is a subset of the other one, but that's no problem until.... nbi again?

huh?

We can only get one nbi per year. How are we supposed to send it to the NVC *and* have it at the interview?

We're already concerned how we'll handle the nbi for our K3 (since we'll submit it to the NVC before the interview and it should already be at the embassy by then). We're assuming that it's ok at the K3 to just tell them that they already have the NBI there at the embassy and give them the case number so they can look it up.

How did the rest of y'all CR1/IR1 people (or anyone else that's had to do this?) handle this? Thanks and ttyl,

mich

Let me show you how to get your tax returns the easy way
