Not because of the economy but Hurricane Ike. It destroyed 3 schools, 2100 kids did not come back plus of course they underinsured all the buildings... They are laying off 220 people, of which 6 secretaries (my job) i'd say i have 90% chance to get RIFed (my 1st year). They are giving us the chance to resign with a 1% pay-out of annual salary which is a couple hundred dollars... no thanks.

I have a one yr contract. I guess the school district just going to 'not extend my contract' which means i can't get unemployment, right?

I don't see why not. Technically, you are laid-off due to lack of work, right? Unemployment insurance is administered by the individual states, so check with your state's employment department.

Sorry to hear that. There should be no reason that you wouldn't get Unemployment insurance.

check with your state unemployment office. they may have a vesting period before which you are ineligeable. some states do, so you have to accumulate a certain number of quarters before you can apply in those states.
