What kind of background checks do in k1 visa ?

They check available databases for criminal and immigration data on both petitioner and beneficiary but do not have direct access to the databases of foreign countries. The US Citizen's domestic records are available as needed and the beneficiary provides police reports from country of citizenship and other countries of residence (after age 16) for more than sometimes six months, sometimes a year.

The AP can be anything from them googling his name to doing interviews with neighbours, friends and family- all depends on the consulate and your individual case.
