Republicans must think letting uninsured but critically ill patients die of curable ailments promotes the general welfare of "we the people".

So, individuality only counts if somebody else is paying for it?

i don't believe that the idea of everyone mandatory paying into a general fund for health care was even insinuated with that phrase.

I thought we, the people, established the Constitution to promote the general welfare, among other things. Context is everything. The preamble is a statement of purpose for the document, not the law, and not a call to action.

The devil in this case is that some people would rather pay a lot more into a system and get worse health care return in order to be able to pat themselves on the back and say, "this system only helps those who help themselves."

What's weird is, that simply isn't true. The system helps people who don't pay into the system, be they incapable or unwilling. True, the help that is provided is last resort and necessarily the most expensive kind, but, who cares?

There's a "we" in any organised society. Social responsibility isn't a difficult concept to understand.
