I live in Northern Virginia, and got mine in just one week. I applied for it when I was already married, once I had a marriage certificate in hand (I had been here less than two months). There were no problems whatsoever at the office - the guy seemed to be familiar with the status of K-1 visa holders, and the fact that my husband was there with me also helped.

hubby was a CR-1, we went in to get ours (though we did check the box on the ds-230, they don't always see it i guess) and it took exactly one week to receive it in the mail

moved from Moving Here and Your New Life In America to Working & Traveling prior to getting a Green Card

This section also covers getting a Social Security Number (SSN) and is for general discussion on all these topics.

does anyone know how long it takes to get one?

Based on the information you have provided we are unable to accurately address your inquiry. If you wish to e-mail us again and provide more information, we will be happy to assist you.

If you prefer, you can call the SSA toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213 or contact your local Social Security office for assistance.

The address and directions to the nearest Social Security office can be obtained from our Social Security Office Locator, which is available on our Website at:

http://www.ssa.gov/locator

Our 800-number telephones generally are less busy during the early morning from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and in the late afternoon and evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. We encourage people to call during these times to avoid busy signals and extended waiting periods. Our busiest times are during the first week of the month and on Mondays and Tuesdays throughout the month. Some services are available 24 hours a day through the 800 number automated menu.

Claudeth came here on a K-1 so after two weeks I took her to the social security office. She received her card a week later.

I don't know how many times I have said this since I have been a member, but if I got a dollar for each time I could probably retire. The amount of time it takes to be assigned an SSN after submitting an application of one person has nothing to do with the amount of time it takes another person. It all depends on how long it takes SSA to verify your immigration status. If you are lucky and they can do it while you are in the office you should have your card within a couple weeks. If they can't verify your status while you are in the office, it could be weeks or in some cases months before you are assgned an SSN.

I know of a person that applied last November and the SSN was assigned yesterday. Your milege may vary.
