Hi!

I was hoping someone on VJ has experience with this and could help me.

I don't have a drivers license but will have to learn how to drive when I live in the US. My question is whether it is possible to start taking classes when I arrive on the K-1 and receive a US drivers license, or do I have to wait until I have permanent residency? I.e. is it possible to take driving classes and get license when only have SSN or do you also have to have a green card? If I can't take classes and get a drivers license during the AOS waiting, I'd rather try to get a drivers license while still in Sweden...

Does anyone have experience with this? Maybe it differs between states???

Thanks!!!

It absolutely depends on the state. In Vermont we had to have the I-797C from filing for adjustment of status for Alla to be eligible for a learners permit. Vermont requires you show you are authorized to remain in the state for at least 180 days, the K-1 itself does not do that. Alla began driving lessons the second day here. Our area is full of private roads, some quite long, which are very quiet and virtually no traffic. There is no law against operating without a license or permit on private property with permission of the owner and that was not a problem for us in most cases. But that is rural Vermont, a big city could be different. She also practiced at empty school parking lots, mall parking lots, etc. That may be a better choice for a city dweller.

Check your state for requirements

I will check the rules for CT. Would be great to be able to learn how to drive as soon as I get there or at least when we file for AOS.

Now, I will give you another suggestion. If you can possibly manage it, pay for and receive professional driving instruction. I do not believe it is the best thing for a new marriage for the husband to teach the wife. :) We survived it, but there were a few evenings of "silent treatment" after driving lessons.

Good luck

Yes, hiring a driver instructor is good advice.

In Dallas we paid $40 per hour which included: Vehicle, Gas, and Driver Instructor. A bargain in my opinion.......

In MA you can drive on an international license for up to a year....

I really didn't have to teach Russell anything as he had already lived here for over a year and had driven in NZ for many years but I have no doubt at all that we could get through a few lessons ourselves if need be. I guess it depends on the couple.

Oh, we got through it. More than a few lessons. :) But really, there are advantages to a professional instructor, not the least of which she goes to bed mad at HIM and not me. But it gets better the less they run off the road and into ditches.

Agreed on the professional driving school. Nothing tests a relationship like driving instruction. Gary speaks the truth!!!!

I have a question ... If you've just relocated to an area how do you establish residency in that area ....

Ive had a look at the Oregon DMV and it says the following

-Do I remain in Oregon for a consecutive period of six months or more each year?

-Have I enrolled my children in an Oregon public school without payment of nonresident tuition fees?

-Do I pay Oregon resident tuition fees at an educational institution maintained by public funds?

-Have I made a declaration to be a resident of Oregon for the purpose of obtaining, at resident rates, a state license (other than an Oregon Driver License)?

-Is Oregon listed as my home of record in my military records?

-Do I pay resident income taxes to the state of Oregon?

I dont see the rest of the requirements being difficult but Im not sure how you would prove you intend to remain and be a resident in OR .... I dont have kids to enrol in a school, it be a while before I get work and start paying tax ...

My fiance been a resident for 6 years and has worked and paid tax the entire time ... He has spoken to his landlord and the landlord is happy to adjust the rental agreement to both names (for AOS) ... would having a residential address and lease agreement be enough or is there something else I would need to do?

Here is the page I was looking at http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/DMV/driverid/residency.shtml

Sounds good!

Still, best to get some professional instruction behind the wheel in Sweden...to learn the basics, at least, while you have time. At least you'll be comfortable while your husband accompanies you on plenty of practice runs in CT
